Sometimes life just doesn\u2019t go your way. You may suddenly find yourself jobless, unable to pay your rent with nowhere to go and nobody to turn to. Far too many homeless families are in this situation, forced to spend Christmas in B&amp;Bs, hostels or even on a stranger\u2019s sofa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For many, Christmas underlines an uncertain future. So how are professionals on the frontline coping with the growing demand to try and keep families off the streets this Christmas? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Working with some of the most vulnerable people in society, homeless charities are providing more than just a roof over people\u2019s heads this festive season. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Latest figures released by the housing charity, <a href=\"https:\/\/england.shelter.org.uk\/donate\/120khomelesschildren?gclid=CjwKEAiAvZTCBRDvnoOaoa2j3xISJABxPjN9uN0q5H4sxtopCKkeXuuk-5MNLWQ2wkI3AblsQWxUHhoCPuHw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shelter<\/a> suggest that throughout England, Wales and Scotland, 120,000 families will be homeless or living in temporary accommodation this Christmas, raising the figure to an eight year high this year.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Among them 12,903 were in emergency accommodation such as B&amp;Bs and hostels. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shelter blame rising cost, shortage of housing and councils facing greater difficulty to find suitable, sustainable homes for families stuck in temporary accommodation, making it impossible for them to move on with life. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<h2>Wales under the microscope<\/h2>\n<p>This year more than 1,100 families in Wales will be waking up this Christmas in a place unfit to call their \u201chome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The National Statistics for Wales states that the number of households applying for local authorities housing assistance under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislation.gov.uk\/anaw\/2014\/7\/contents\/enacted\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Housing Wales Act 2014<\/a> show that from April to June 2016, households assessed or threatened with homelessness reached, 2,349. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/resident\/Housing\/Homeless-or-at-risk\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cardiff<\/a> by the end of the quarter, 390 were held in emergency accommodation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shortage of social housing means it\u2019s increasingly difficult for people to find a home that suits their needs and budget. The harsh realities of modern day hidden homeless means that their suffering is being forgotten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Shelter UK spoke to 25 families in emergency B&amp;Bs and hostels and around half had been in that situation for more than six months. Every family lived in a single room, with no space for children to play, exposed to drug abuse and fighting, along with strangers sleeping in the filthy corridors.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>&#8220;We are constantly trying to break<br \/>\nthe cycle of homelessness&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Meet Kimberley: Last year was a Christmas she will want to forget. At 34 weeks pregnant she had the devastating news from her landlord saying they were not going to renew their contract. Kimberley felt shame as they simply had to sit and wait until they had to be evicted.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They contacted Shelter, who coached them through every step of the process. Shelter\u2019s specialist advisers make the difference between a family losing their home and keeping it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Last Christmas, Kimberley pinned a Christmas tree made out of felt onto their bare wall. This year they will have their own tree in a place they can call home.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Intervention and prevention<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>\u201cOn one morning in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/thewallich.com\/landing-page\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Wallich<\/a> saw 46 people sleeping rough in the city centre,\u201d says Zoe Westerman strategic corporate relationships manager at the homeless charity.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">She added, \u201cMany people who experience homelessness have multiple needs such as mental health issues and substance misuse, Cardiff can offer a wide range of services which other areas can\u2019t.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Intervention and prevention of imminent eviction are their key aims. Wallich support residential projects, from direct access to hostels and emergency night shelters, to providing <a href=\"https:\/\/thewallich.com\/our-projects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tenancy support projects<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It\u2019s not just about providing families with a bed. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huggard.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Huggard\u2019s<\/a>, a homeless charity in the city provide opportunities for homeless people to overcome and tackle their complex problems. Richard Landen, hostel manager says, &#8220;We are constantly trying to break the cycle of homelessness.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They tailor their help to each individual\u2019s needs to deal with a number of problems which may be preventing them from living in permanent accommodation. This may be practical help like CV <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huggard.org.uk\/about-us\/services\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">workshops<\/a> to build skills and confidence to help put them back in employment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At Huggard\u2019s hostel centre they have 20 rooms, each have an ensuite and are always full. This Christmas even the day centre floor space is used to provide sleeping space for a further 25 people, according to Richard.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a fairly depressing situation, but there is hope\u201d, says Richard. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">We may not see these families sleeping on the streets, yet with nowhere to call home they live in fear of the unknown.
