So, you go for a jog. But, it\u2019s dark outside, and you don\u2019t feel as safe as you would in the daylight. You try to forget this and focus on maintaining your pace, but with each corner you turn, you turn with caution, never sure of who may be lurking behind. It wouldn&#8217;t be so easy to run away as you\u2019re already out of breath, leaving you defenceless.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This is how 34 year-old GP, Rosie Harrison, felt when alone at night. However, tired of feeling defenceless, Rosie took matters into her own hands and decided to begin training in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/active\/self-defence-art-krav-maga-becomes-cardiff-craze\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Krav Maga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, a self-defence system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8220;After I had my second baby I had taken up running as a way to lose the baby weight. It started getting darker in the evenings, so it was a thought that taking up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Krav_Maga\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Krav Maga<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> would be a good way to improve fitness but also to hopefully learn something. Initially, it was just a few techniques to protect myself, I didn\u2019t think I would carry on doing it this long,\u201d chuckled Rosie.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After a year of Krav Maga training, Rosie no longer feels as unsafe. However, Rosie was not alone, as m<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">ore than half of women in Cardiff feel unsafe when walking in the city centre after dark, prompting Cardiff Council\u2019s cabinet to discuss a new <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Your-Council\/Strategies-plans-and-policies\/Local-Wellbeing-Assessment\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Public Service Board<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> strategy to make the city safer.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This new strategy follows a recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/Your-Council\/Have-your-say\/Ask%20Cardiff%20Library\/People%20in%20Cardiff%20are%20safe%20and%20feel%20safe%20-%20Ask%20Cardiff%20Survey.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> which revealed that 51% of women feel unsafe when walking in the city centre after dark, compared to 35.1% of males (see figure one). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Securing a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.100ways.org.uk\/purple-flag.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Purple Flag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> status for the city was also discussed by Cardiff Council. Photo credit: Ask Cardiff Residents Survey 2016)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><b>Taking matters into your own hands<br \/>\n<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One short-term solution to this issue could be if women were to take up a combat sport by means of protection, or, as a way to increase their confidence when alone at night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Antonia James, a 24 year-old student who is currently learning Krav Maga at <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.self-defence-academy.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Masters Academy Cardiff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, said: It\u2019s done a lot for my confidence. After only a month in, this guy only wanted directions, but it was five o\u2019clock in the morning and it was dark, but I was okay.
