However, in one corner of the harbour, a small group of people in matching red salopettes are preparing to sail a very special boat.<\/p>\n<p>With a mast that soars 95 feet above the water, the Challenge Wales yacht towers over all the other boats in the marina. 57-year-old crew volunteer Bob Jones is moving steadily across the deck, taking care to avoid the neat coils of rope and taught wires that seem specifically designed to trip up careless novices.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI coach cycling on the velodrome in Newport during the week,\u201d Bob explains. Challenge Wales gives him a chance to do something very different to his day job. \u201cQuite extreme, yes \u2013 round and round on a bit of pine to bobbing up and down on the Bristol Channel!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>One of a team<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cardiff-based Bob started volunteering for the Challenge Wales charity fifteen months ago. Since then, he\u2019s helped young people from across Wales get their first taste of sailing, taking small groups on voyages that can last up to several days.<\/p>\n<p>Bob found out about the charity purely by chance: \u201cThe boat was parked on Mermaid Quay one weekend. My partner and I were there visiting a market of some sort. I saw the boat, collected a leaflet, and it said you can buy yourself a day on the boat. So I did.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI enjoyed it, and talking to the people on the boat that day they explained what the charity was about and that they were always on the lookout for new volunteers,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I volunteered.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, it wasn\u2019t all plain sailing, despite the fact that Bob has always been used to an active lifestyle. \u201cI did an awful lot of\u00a0windsurfing in the past, but that was about as far as my sailing experience spread,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2011\/11\/Interview_5_bobjones_Small_JG.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4367\" title=\"Interview_5_bobjones_Small_JG\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2011\/11\/Interview_5_bobjones_Small_JG.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Jones Challenge Wales\" width=\"200\" height=\"130\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4367\" title=\"Interview_5_bobjones_Small_JG\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2011\/11\/Interview_5_bobjones_Small_JG.jpg\" alt=\"Bob Jones Challenge Wales\" width=\"200\" height=\"130\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>Moving from the individual pursuit of windsurfing to the team\u00a0environment of sailing was certainly a challenge to begin with, Bob says. \u201cThe loading and the stresses on all the rigging is enormous. And then there\u2019s the teamwork involved, you know? Rather than being a single person thing, the boat needs a minimum of six and ideally twelve or more to operate it efficiently.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pastime for the privileged?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people still assume that sailing is only a pastime for the wealthy \u2013 a world of yacht club blazers and privileged access. Bob\u2019s experience with Challenge Wales shows that needn\u2019t be the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf someone comes from a family background where money is tight,\u201d he explains, \u201cthen the trustees can say, \u2018well, we can offer a full bursary to that individual because we think they need that much help\u2019. And then perhaps someone who\u2019s a little bit more fortunate may be offered a bursary that\u2019s 40% or 50%. The youngest we\u2019ve had is 12, but pretty much they\u2019re in the group from 13 to 17,\u201d Bob says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe take them from any experience, from complete novice even. Some don\u2019t know the pointy end from the blunt end \u2013 no experience is necessary. Then we tailor activities according to their age, size and experience.\u201d That, claims Bob, is what makes the charity so much fun to be involved with.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Navigating all conditions<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With clear blue skies and unruffled seas, the prospect of sailing out of Cardiff Bay seems an enticing way to spend a weekend. The sun gleams off the yacht\u2019s white hull; a cool breeze sets the rigging jangling.\u00a0 However, with the charity running voyages all year round, conditions aren\u2019t always this favourable.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFortunately I don\u2019t suffer from motion sickness in any way, shape or form, but some people do,\u201d says Bob. \u201cSome people sail on the boat for a period of time and the motion sickness doesn\u2019t bother them at all \u2013 and then it just happens to be one day, one motion, one particular sea, and it makes them poorly for that trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut most people get over it with a bit of luck,\u201d he adds wryly.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it isn&#8217;t every day that school children are able to get their hands on a boat that has sailed round the world twice. \u201cFor youngsters to have an opportunity to come on board a boat \u2013 that\u2019s exciting in itself,\u201d Bob says. \u201cA boat this size? Doubly exciting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When there is a day\u2019s sailing to look forward to, getting up early is more than worth it, says Bob. \u201cIt\u2019s a real adventure: you\u2019ve got to meet people, you\u2019ve got to do stuff as a team \u2013 this boat just doesn\u2019t work on individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Challenge Wales volunteer invites us on board Penarth Marina is almost deserted on a bright November morning \u2013 not many people are prepared to be up and about before 9am on a Sunday.
