The Welsh Assembly building marked the start and end of Gareth\u2019s circuit of Wales on foot.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">He followed the Wales Coast Path to Wales\u2019 northernmost beaches before returning via the Offa\u2019s Dyke Path. He also climbed Wales\u2019 three peaks &#8211; Cadair Idris, Snowdon and Pen-y-Fan &#8211; covering 1,164 miles between 8 June and 29 <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px\">August 2015.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was hospitalised. That set me back six months while I built up my strength again.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The idea came on a rainy afternoon at the office. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were no customers,\u201d says Gareth, \u201cI&#8217;d stacked the same shelves three times. It was boring. We received a delivery of Welsh Coastline leaflets. I picked one up and looked at the Welsh border, thinking, \u2018I wonder how long that&#8217;d take to walk.\u2019\u201d He smiles. \u201cA quick Google search later I\u2019d decided.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Getting off the ground<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">People told Gareth he was mad. \u201cThe one person who responded positively was my grandad. He said, \u2018I\u2019d have loved to do it if I was your age.\u2019 That was the only affirmation I needed,\u201d Gareth says.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Cardiff Character: Gareth Axenderrie\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9JV0ZtINvr0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Cardiff Character: Gareth Axenderrie\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9JV0ZtINvr0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There were setbacks. On one training expedition Gareth contracted food poisoning, returning home early. \u201cIt turned into something quite bad,\u201d he says. \u201cI was hospitalised. That set me back six months while I built up my strength again.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI&#8217;d like to go overseas as part of a team. It was incredibly valuable to learn how to be alone, but being part of a team, that&#8217;s what I&#8217;d love to do next.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gareth discussed the most memorable moments. \u201cWhen other people got involved. I was on my own for 90% of it. I&#8217;d speak to cows, sheep, myself,\u201d he laughs. \u201cBut when a local in the pub chats to you, and all of a sudden everyone in the place is your friend, that\u2019s amazing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Climbing Pen-y-Fan with friends and family was another standout moment. \u201cPeople make places. A pub could look sketchy &#8211; if the people there are nice there&#8217;s nowhere you&#8217;d rather be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><strong>Present day<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Gareth, a journalism student in Cardiff now, grins when asked about any future plans. He says, \u201cI try to get into the Beacons between deadlines and essays.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI&#8217;d like to go overseas as part of a team. He wanted to repay them for treating his grandparents. The final sum raised was near \u00a37000.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFinishing at the Bay was undoubtedly the most emotional moment,\u201d says Gareth. \u201cI hadn\u2019t seen my grandad. I hadn&#8217;t heard him on the phone &#8211; he&#8217;d lost his voice because of throat cancer while I was away. At that point I just wanted to get home.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt the finish he was the first person to greet me. A massive smile on his face. Everything was worth it in that moment.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">His grandfather passed away at 91, a month after Gareth\u2019s return. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cMy grandma says, for those last months, the thing which got him through every day was reading my blog,\u201d says Gareth. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I didn\u2019t know the prognosis at that point. They had kept it from me.
