\/><\/noscript><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Active transport could be the answer to Cardiff&#8217;s pollution problem<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Cycling UK have questioned the measures put forward by the Welsh Assembly Government to reduce emissions of nitrogen dioxide (NO\u2082). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking at the ICE Wales National Transport conference this November, Cycling UK have raised concerns about the government\u2019s focus on meeting short term targets, and not proposing more long term, sustainable measures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Emissions of nitrogen dioxide are the only limit value put forward by the EU Ambient Air Quality Directive that the UK government has failed to meet. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In a bid to rectify this, the Welsh Assembly Government has recruited WSP, an engineering consultancy firm, whose main aim is to reduce the emissions as soon as practically possible. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speed limits of 50mph have been introduced on six major roads in Wales as this has been identified as the speed at which cars produce the least NO\u2082 per mile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Speaking at the conference, WSP director Peter Evans, said: \u201cThe key issue is bringing forward the reduction of NO\u2082 in the shortest possible time to ensure compliance with air quality framework.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46460\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 4032px\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-46460 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/11\/roads-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-46460 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2018\/11\/roads-.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4032\" height=\"3024\" \/><\/noscript> Cars are a big contributor to NO\u2082 pollution<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">However, Roger Geffen MBE, Policy Director of Cycling UK, said there is an institutional bias in transport planning which focuses on long distance journeys, when two thirds of people\u2019s journeys are under five miles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe Welsh Government has really not assessed what is the potential for a comprehensive package of measures around active travel\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Peter responded that the technology we have today might not be the technology we have in future years, and questioned if it was worth spending money on infrastructure if it would not be efficient in the long term. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Roger was concerned that too much focus is being placed on more modern cars with lower NO\u2082 emissions, when more should be done to encourage active transport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He said: \u201cWe need to be thinking about fewer cars as well as newer cars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Cycling UK
