Are grants enough to keep the city\u2019s music scene afloat? New indie mag City Sounds<\/em> steps in to celebrate all things independent Cardiff<\/strong><\/h2>\n

PYST (Post in Welsh) is one year old. <\/span><\/p>\n

It\u2019s a government-funded initiative for Welsh-language musicians and <\/span>describes itself <\/span><\/a>as a \u201c<\/span>digital distribution and label promotion service<\/span>.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

Gorwelion Horizons<\/span><\/a> has been running for slightly longer.<\/span><\/p>\n

The initiative, created in 2014 by BBC Cymru Wales and the Arts Council Wales aims to help Welsh artists.<\/span><\/p>\n

Its <\/span>Launchpad<\/span><\/a> scheme is a \u00a350,000 biannual fund for up-and-coming Welsh artists and the pot is split between 25 artists for marketing or equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gorwelion is also in association with <\/span>Festival No. 6<\/span><\/a>, which takes place in the village of Portmeirion in Snowdonia, as seen in famous 1960s programme \u2018The Prisoner\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

They have also previously run exposure-based schemes putting Welsh artists on bigger platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n

Past bands that have worked with the scheme have included <\/span>Chroma<\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Buzzard Buzzard Buzzard<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n

A new Cardiff music magazine is filling in the gaps between PYST and Gorwelion.<\/span><\/p>\n

Alt.Cardiff would like to introduce <\/span>City Sounds <\/span><\/i>and its inaugural edition, launching 11 December 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n

City Sounds<\/span><\/i> is a punchy new quarterly covering Cardiff\u2019s blooming indie rock scene, put together by five members of the Alt.Cardiff team.<\/span><\/p>\n

City Sounds <\/span><\/i>is a platform for both the established and the rising artist. <\/span><\/p>\n

I<\/span>t is for the independent venues that should be recognised and it is for all things \u2018scene\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

The magazine is for readers who \u2018live the scene\u2019, as the publication\u2019s mission statement puts it, and sheds light on all the components of Cardiff\u2019s growing scene<\/span><\/p>\n

City Sounds <\/span><\/i>journalist Oliver Cuenca explained to us: \u201cWe want to give Cardiff\u2019s indie music scene the attention it deserves, and give them in-depth, exciting and exclusive content on the music and clubs they love.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The magazine\u2019s first issue features an exclusive interview with trio\u00a0<\/span>Chroma, <\/span><\/i>the group behind the tracks ‘<\/span>Girls Talk’\u00a0<\/span>and ‘<\/span>Claddu 2016.’<\/span><\/p>\n

Lead singer Katie Hall, 22, said: \u201c<\/span>I think the Welsh music scene is stronger than it’s ever been.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

City Sounds<\/em> is drawing attention to that strength and where, in some areas, it is absent.<\/span><\/p>\n

The publication also discusses the unreliable funding in the arts and particularly in the Cardiff-based music venues. <\/span><\/p>\n
