{"id":48186,"date":"2019-10-28T16:20:30","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T16:20:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/?p=48186"},"modified":"2019-10-28T16:20:30","modified_gmt":"2019-10-28T16:20:30","slug":"voxpop-is-there-a-positive-future-for-independent-welsh-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/2019\/10\/28\/voxpop-is-there-a-positive-future-for-independent-welsh-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Voxpop: Is there a positive future for independent Welsh music?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As Pity My Brain prepares to celebrate its fifth birthday at Clwb Ifor Bach, independent Welsh music becomes a big talking point<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Clwb.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48634\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Clwb.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48634\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The state of independent music by Welsh artists has been a popular subject for the people of Cardiff as of late, with <a href=\"https:\/\/swnfest.com\/\">S\u0175n festival<\/a> having recently taken place on the weekend of 18 October for the twelfth year running.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 9 November, Pity My Brain, an independent Welsh music PR organisation, will be celebrating five years since they put on their first gig at Clwb Ifor Bach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To mark the occasion, Pity My Brain will dedicate the night to showcasing the talents of indie Welsh artists and bringing them to the attention of the crowd at Clwb Ifor Bach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They will be hosting a line-up that includes Merthyr rock band Dead Shed Jokers and the evening promises to be a celebration of indie music from in and around the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked if they think the future of independent Welsh music is bright or not, this is what the people had to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Sarah-Voxpop-2-1.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48292\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Sarah-Voxpop-2-1.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48292\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Sarah Baker, 23, record seller at Spiller\u2019s Records, Cardiff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think it\u2019s looking really good. At the minute, we\u2019ve got people like Boy Azooga [a Cardiff-based indie band] who won the Welsh music prize last year. I think the scene and future is pretty healthy but it\u2019s still growing.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Voxpop-3.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48202\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Voxpop-3.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48202\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Laurence Richards, 57, nursing assistant, Cardiff<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the scene is doing well because it\u2019s going back to the old ways as the bands around here perform in small pubs and bars. I went to the Steelhouse Festival in Ebbw Vale recently, so indie Welsh music definitely has a future through going back to the old ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Ren-Voxpop.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48209\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/Ren-Voxpop.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48209\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ren Faulkner, 21, part-time filmmaker and coffee shop worker, Penarth<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think the future is very exciting, especially as Green Man in the Brecon Beacons has recently become one of the biggest music festivals in the UK, and as places here like Tiny Rebel hold music nights that let Welsh artists get their foot in the door.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/James-voxpop-1.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48291\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/James-voxpop-1.tif\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48291\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>James Lawson, 22, unemployed, Swansea<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think the future is bright if people safeguard the venues for Welsh music. Gwdihw closed down recently, as did Buffalo.
