England holds<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityretail.org.uk\/charity-shops-faq\/\"> 83%<\/a> of this figure, while Wales makes up just<a href=\"https:\/\/www.charityretail.org.uk\/charity-shops-faq\/\"> 5%. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But how do the estimated 560 charity shops impact smaller towns across Wales? And how does this further impact the image of these areas?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades the issue of whether charity shops are unsightly on our high streets has been widely debated. Some believe that an abundance of charity shops determines an area to be deprived. But does this belief stand in regard to high streets? And is the rise of charity shops in South Wales portraying an image of deprivation?<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caerphilly high street has seen a substantial rise in the number of charity shops, with three local and long-standing businesses replaced by them in just under six months, adding a further six charity shops on the high street in 2019.\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In September 2018, Labour Assembly Member for Caerphilly, Hefin David, noted the state of the \u201cstreet scene\u201d in Caerphilly. In an<a href=\"https:\/\/www.southwalesargus.co.uk\/news\/16910209.caerphilly-town-centre-detracts-from-castle\/\"> article <\/a>by the South Wales Argus he said: \u201cOne of the problems with Caerphilly is that, as you look away from the Castle towards the street scene, the street scene can be vastly improved.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is nothing to say that Hefin David was discussing the impact of charity shops. But in the year since his  recognition of the severity of the \u201cstreet scene\u201d, there has been a discussion amongst the community of Caerphilly on the impact that charity shops have on the image of the town.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>We took to Caerphilly town centre to ask local people if charity shops affect their image of the high street and with them, carry an air of impoverishment.&nbsp;<\/strong><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/IMG_3732-234x312.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48413\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/IMG_3732-234x312.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48413\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Annette Hopkins  57  flower therapist and retailer  Caerphilly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there are too many charity shops on the high street then it looks as though we are a poor community. In Whitchurch there are one or two but there does seem to be an awful lot in Caerphilly.
