{"id":49338,"date":"2019-11-01T15:45:17","date_gmt":"2019-11-01T15:45:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/altcardiff\/?p=49338"},"modified":"2019-11-01T15:45:17","modified_gmt":"2019-11-01T15:45:17","slug":"cardiff-barista-school-teaches-people-new-skills","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/2019\/11\/01\/cardiff-barista-school-teaches-people-new-skills\/","title":{"rendered":"Barista school teaches new skills to coffee lovers and job seekers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A barista school is teaching practical skills to coffee enthusiasts, existing baristas and job seekers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/IMG_1639.jpeg\" alt=\"Row of blue coffee cups under espresso machine\" class=\"wp-image-50299\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/IMG_1639.jpeg\" alt=\"Row of blue coffee cups under espresso machine\" class=\"wp-image-50299\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Learn to pour a perfect latte and a frothy cappuccino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff coffee shop, 200 Degrees, is running a barista school to give people a better understanding of coffee preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Running at weekends, classes can give people new skills and a new understanding of coffee, whatever their previous experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graham Hepburn, head of coffee at <a href=\"https:\/\/200degs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">200 Degrees<\/a>, said sessions aim to give people a better understanding of coffee, however they make it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three courses are aimed at improving the skills of existing or aspiring baristas, giving those who attend a wider employment prospectus in a country that consumes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/life-style\/uk-coffee-week-2018-british-people-drinking-millions-cups-day-consumption-rise-a8307206.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">95 million coffees a day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graham added, \u201cMany come to gain experience, allowing more employment opportunities or simply helping them get better at a job they already have.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/IMG_1688.jpeg\" alt=\"Barista school in progress - people learning to make coffee\" class=\"wp-image-49351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/10\/IMG_1688.jpeg\" alt=\"Barista school in progress - people learning to make coffee\" class=\"wp-image-49351\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Course sizes are small, so you\u2019ll get lots of direct training<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A basic barista course teaches people of all experience levels to make common drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos, which could be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reed.co.uk\/career-advice\/how-to-become-a-barista\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">foot in the door<\/a> to a cafe job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The intermediate course is aimed at those who already understand <a href=\"https:\/\/beantocupcoffee.co.uk\/how-they-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">how espresso machines work<\/a>, perhaps those who have used an espresso machine as part of a hospitality role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advanced course can teach those with previous barista experience to improve their existing skills, with advanced latte art and the science behind milk microfoam being taught.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All could help you land a job, or take your current one to a new level, according to Graham.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is also a home brew course to teach enthusiasts about bean production; different home brewing methods; and give practical advice on which beans, methods and recipes will suit individual flavour preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This could improve the coffee you make, even if you only drink at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>200 Degrees is located on Queen Street, Cardiff.
