As of 2019, she\u2019s had three.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surrounded by delicatessens, salons and rival cafes, Kemi\u2019s is a hub of the Pontcanna community and its food scene.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From hungry builders to 20-year regulars coming in for a coffee and a chat, Cardiffians seem drawn as much to Kemi\u2019s personality as they are to the food and coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it\u2019s taken a lot of work to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/IMG_0016.jpeg\" alt=\"Kemi Nevins and a staff member behind the bar in Kemi's cafe\" class=\"wp-image-50319\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/IMG_0016.jpeg\" alt=\"Kemi Nevins and a staff member behind the bar in Kemi's cafe\" class=\"wp-image-50319\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Kemi&#8217;s serves something for everyone, whether you&#8217;re a vegan or a carnivore<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hike ups and bust ups<\/strong><br>Kemi\u2019s career began as a nurse in England, but changed when Kemi decided to follow a whim.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI loved the patients and supporting people,\u201d she says, \u201cbut things change. I got a bit bored and thought, \u2018I could open a cafe\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo, 20 years ago on 1 October 1999, I opened the first Kemi\u2019s on Mill Lane.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were hurdles at first but surprisingly, she adds, none of these were related to her gender or Nigerian heritage. It was all financial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemi remortgaged her property and maxed credit cards, but she managed to keep the Mill Lane cafe running for almost three years before a rent hike forced her to sell up and get a 9 to 5.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>Even if the Queen was in front of me, <\/strong><br><strong>I\u2019d still chat with people<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Normality didn\u2019t last long, though. In 2002 she opened Kemi\u2019s at Craft in the Bay, which ran for 11 years, only coming to an end when a monetary bust up drove her and the landlords apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would\u2019ve kept going,\u201d she confesses, \u201cif they hadn\u2019t been greedy and if I hadn\u2019t told them where to go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kemi then breaks off as a regular enters. Everyone that comes in wants to talk to her, and she to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven if the Queen was sat in front of me,\u201d she states, \u201cI\u2019d still have to chat with people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/IMG_0024.jpeg\" alt=\"Kemi Nevins portrait\" class=\"wp-image-50321\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/IMG_0024.jpeg\" alt=\"Kemi Nevins portrait\" class=\"wp-image-50321\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Kemi&#8217;s larger-than-life personality seems to keep customers coming back, although great food and coffee help too, of course.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Blissfully unaware<\/strong><br>Since opening in 2012, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Pontcanna cafe (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/kemis.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Pontcanna cafe<\/a> has been a success for Kemi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur coffee and ingredients are fresh and good quality,\u201d she explains, \u201cbut we\u2019ve also changed with the trends. No jacket potatoes or pasta salads anymore. It\u2019s all gluten free, vegan, vegetarian now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe haven&#8217;t stood still. There\u2019s something for everyone and it\u2019s been good for business.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her son, Patrick, has also been instrumental in their success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s grown the business, has youth, enthusiasm and new ideas. He\u2019s made it his own,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are still issues, Kemi admits, \u201cbut I\u2019m blissfully unaware these days. Patrick is at the helm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Make it work for us<\/strong><br>At 57, Kemi is a divorced mother of three, has had two knee replacements and owned three cafes.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is understandable, then, that she has handed over daily management to Patrick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote style=\"text-align:center\" class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-default is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><strong>There will be a place for it <\/strong><br><strong>until we want it to end.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>She is still involved in the cafe that she has given her life to &#8211; buying ingredients, washing dishes and remaining the face of Kemi\u2019s &#8211; and remains part of the cafe\u2019s future plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to make it work without compromising our health,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ve worked hard, made it work and people want to come and eat and share their lives with us.
