Counters Cardiff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike, 25, has left the barista life behind to take on what seems like his perfect role, as a manager and resident \u2018board games guru\u2019.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI consider myself as more of a pseudo-guru,\u201d Mike smiles, \u201cI just learn the rules of the games I like the look of.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Mike\u2019s modest outlook, it is clear to see that board games have had a big impact on his life, and they have fostered memories that he holds dear. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI played more board games than video games growing up,&#8221; he continues, \u201cprobably because my parents wanted me to be more social with my time.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mike reminisces, \u201cI grew up with the classics like <em>KerPlunk<\/em> and <em>Operation<\/em>; the ones that you would beg your parents to get you for Christmas.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Cardiff Character: Mike Griffith\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/d7jDBrPFTg8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; Counters opened on St Mary Street in November 2018, and Mike explained that there are some marked differences between the board game cafe ethos and the attitudes of the barista jobs he has left behind.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a barista, you can be stood there for eight hours a day getting coffees out; it\u2019s quick-fire customer service. There is a much more chilled vibe here, and the clientele is different.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The key difference is that our main point of sale is our massive collection of board games.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cafe has over 500 board games to choose from. Add to this their popular selection of craft beers, and you have quite the unorthodox sales pairing. (opens in a new tab)\">the board game industry will be worth over \u00a39bn by 2023. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another study conducted by American think tank GVR proposes that <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"this rise is due to millenials yearning for more \u2018old school\u2019 games. (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/playing-cards--board-games-market-size-worth-21-56-billion-by-2025-grand-view-research-inc-300934566.html\" target=\"_blank\">this rise is due to millenials yearning for more \u2018old school\u2019 games.<\/a> Mike sees it differently.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA majority of our customers are millennials, but we do have younger and older generations coming in to play too,\u201d he says.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Mike, the reasoning behind the spike in popularity is clear. \u201cOld board games have their place in history&#8221;, he continues, &#8220;but new board games are coming up with some terrific new mechanics and artwork.
