Some of them have been bought by Giorgio Armani<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>When Keith Munro walks in, all of his\ncharisma and happiness momentarily fill the calm and intimate space of Lufkin\nCoffee, at Kings Road Yard. He doesn\u2019t change the atmosphere: he adds to it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The jazz music in the background makes for\nthe perfect accompaniment to the conversation. Not many people dared to walk\noutside on such a rainy day, but Keith and a beautiful woman are there, protecting\nKeith\u2019s pots under their coats from the heavy rain. The woman introduces\nherself as Caroline before leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As soon as he sits down, he orders a cappuccino, \u201cPlease.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was my wife, she\u2019s French,\u201d he says. \u201cI\nmet her in Paris when I was 26 and we\u2019ve been together for 35 years now.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They met by chance, like in a movie. He was looking out of a balcony in Paris when she got out of a car on the opposite side of the road. She walked into the block and his friend, Ross Lovegrove, invited her in but she didn\u2019t accept. When Keith went to the door he saw her about to go up the next flight of stairs so he said \u201cjoin the party!\u201d and she did. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a big, contagious laugh comes out, both\nfrom his mouth and his icy eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>Pottery is in my blood. When I\u2019m making pots, I have a smile on my face all the time<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the beginning of their life\ntogether, filled with projects such as the creation of the Pontcanna Farmers\u2019\nMarket. All that Keith and Caroline do is driven by passion and a wish to pursue\nhappiness while helping others. It\u2019s selfless and pure, no pretentions. Is\nthere something that makes Keith the happiest?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/Character_KeithMunro_6_Smiling_VZ-234x312.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50548\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2019\/11\/Character_KeithMunro_6_Smiling_VZ-234x312.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-50548\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Keith, in the past ten years, has also embarked on projects in London as an interior designer<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cPottery!\nIt\u2019s in my blood. When I\u2019m making pots, I have a smile on my face all the time\u201d,\nhe says. Something that is hardly ever missing from his friendly expressions. He\nadds he\u2019d be happy to make pots for the rest of his life, although he hasn\u2019t\nbeen able to do it every day like he used to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The new studio by the beach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the moment Keith is in a transitioning\nperiod moving his studio from Cardiff to the Gower. He loves the countryside\nand the city for the endless inspiration that they can give him, but he doesn\u2019t\nsee himself permanently living in either. \u201cI need both,\u201d he explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keith was 14 when he first touched clay.\nThe second he did, he knew he wanted to become a potter. He says he saw a\nprogram on BBC called <em>Mud and Water Man<\/em>\n(about an English potter going to Africa to observe African pottery) which had\na huge influence on him. \u201cI loved what the African people were making,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;What I want to achieve with my work is to make things simple and pure&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The purity of ceramics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>African pottery insinuated itself in Keith\u2019s own technique of making <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/culture\/winner-of-fresh-award-toni-de-jesus-chats-about-his-life-as-a-ceramicist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"ceramics (opens in a new tab)\">ceramics<\/a>. It took him three years to develop a clay that had three fundamental characteristics: withstand high temperature, waterproof without a glaze, and able to capture the flames of the oven when touched.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keith confesses that his inspirations are African art, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesprucecrafts.com\/raku-firing-step-by-step-2745873\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Japanese raku (opens in a new tab)\">Japanese raku<\/a>, and primitive art. He loves these techniques because people using them make things naively and not for money. \u201cI think that\u2019s the best type of art;\u201d he says. \u201cTo make it for yourself. To do it from your soul. It\u2019s very, very beautiful when it\u2019s that pure.
