I felt useless and depressed,\u201d reveals Rebecca Elkin, a single mum from Llanelli. This is something many other people in the same position say and feel, while relying on Universal Credit to get by. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After coming into force in 2013, the social security payment combining six different types of benefits for working-age people who have a low household income, has been under major scrutiny and criticism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows the news that claimants could get <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.express.co.uk\/finance\/personalfinance\/1213777\/universal-credit-uk-claim-saving-account\" target=\"_blank\">\u00a31,200 bonus money<\/a> under a new government scheme. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Universal Credit has benefited many across Wales and the UK, many others are left feeling disenfranchised and are forced to resort to uncertain alternatives when their social security payments fail to materialise leaving them stressed, worried and fearing the unknown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listed below are some tips and advice from real people about what to do if you\u2019re questioning your Universal Credit payment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"#InPoverty Universal Credit explainer video\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TDfPAGJkeu4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"#InPoverty Universal Credit explainer video\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TDfPAGJkeu4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><figcaption>If you&#8217;re having trouble with the Universal Credit website, watch our video that gives helpful tips on how to navigate it simply.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Appeal the Universal Credit decision&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have the right to appeal if you\u2019re unhappy with a Universal Credit decision; whether your payment has been rejected, you\u2019ve been given the wrong amount or have been sanctioned.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the only way to do so is through an online form that has to be filled out in a month and for some, access to the internet isn\u2019t practical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gillian Guy, chief executive of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Citizens Advice,<\/a> a network of charities that provide free, relevant information and advice, said: \u201cOur evidence shows many people on Universal Credit are struggling to make ends meet, and that deductions are contributing to this.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said the government should introduce affordability tests when recouping debts from claimants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Rebecca<\/strong>, 38, from Llanelli, experienced the downfalls of Universal Credit when she started using it in June. She was admitted to a treatment facility and didn\u2019t have the access or facilities to pay her childcare bills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebecca claims that 85% of her childcare payments were late.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t have access to internet during treatment so I couldn\u2019t upload my creche invoice as proof that Universal Credit were meant to be paying the fees,\u201d Rebecca said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI had to use my own money that I didn\u2019t have.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Apply for a hardship payment&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue Anderson, head of media at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stepchange.org\/\">Step Change<\/a>, a debt charity, says: \u201cWith almost 9.8 million people showing signs of <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"financial distress (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/in-poverty\/inpoverty-what-its-like-to-experience-redundancy-in-your-twenties\" target=\"_blank\">financial distress<\/a>, many households are at risk of reaching a tipping point into problem debt.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sue continued, &#8220;A knock to income triggered by events such as illness, unemployment or relationship breakdown makes people three times more likely to experience problem debt. It can happen to anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019ve been sanctioned &#8211; when you\u2019ve failed to meet your responsibilities &#8211; you can apply for a hardship payment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is up to 60% of the amount you were sanctioned in the last month and reduces further Universal Credit payments as you have to pay it through that system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-style-large is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI felt rubbish having to go to a food bank as it\u2019s something I thought I\u2019d never have to do. I felt useless and depressed.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Rebecca eventually had a refund when she left treatment and could physically explain her situation and prove she had a valid explanation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She uploaded her previous months creche fees and Universal Credit ended up owing her \u00a3700 that she received after numerous phone calls.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Provide evidence through an online letter&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Often, people are given the wrong payment which leaves many with no money. If you think this might be you, you can contact Universal Credit on their free helpline &#8211; 0800 328 5644, or give supporting evidence through an online letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.universal-credit.service.gov.uk\/sign-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"here (opens in a new tab)\">here<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet for some, this is still hard to do. They started using Universal Credit in November 2018 which was a big help as Student Finance Wales didn\u2019t have provisions for pregnant students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emily and her family are now in debt of up to \u00a32k because her Universal Credit payments were incorrect and having to live off less money for a month resulted in Cwtch Care Charity, a care company, providing her daughter with some clothes and being given a voucher for a food bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that out of \u00a3875 of our rent, \u00a3551 is paid by Universal Credit and every \u00a31 my boyfriend and me make over that amount, 67p is taken from our Universal Credit,\u201d Emily explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even though they could be living in a cheaper location, Emily, who is now in full time employment, didn\u2019t want to temporarily move her family as eventually they hope they won\u2019t have to keep using the system.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite successful application, delays in Universal Credit will mean that those in the same position as Rebecca and Emily will likely be visiting a foodbank this Christmas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are the consequences and who can you turn to if your Universal Credit payment is wrong?
