If you\u2019re a black, Asian or minority ethnic (BAME) woman however, things are even harder. Research shows that BAME women in Wales are far less likely to be employed and far more likely to be living in poverty than their white counterparts. When they do enter the workforce,  prejudice, discrimination and bias prevent them from progressing in their careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take Chisomo Phiri; she\u2019s the perfect candidate on paper. She graduated from Swansea University with a 2.1 in Public Relations and Media. She was head of her student union, women\u2019s officer for NUS Wales and even launched a national campaign to tackle period poverty. People\u2019s attitudes need to change but it&#8217;s difficult in the current climate.&#8221; \n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Job applications from people with white-sounding names are 74% more likely to get callbacks for jobs. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This should, perhaps, come as no surprise.<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/fullfact.org\/economy\/job-applicants-ethnic-minority-sounding-names-are-less-likely-be-called-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Research<\/a> shows that job applications from people with white-sounding names are 74% more likely to get callbacks for jobs than people with an ethnic minority name.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are so many talented young BAME women in Wales with degrees and skills but they&#8217;re not getting on in their careers, ultimately, because of their race,\u201d said Chisomo.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A draining issue <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent figures from the Office for National Statistics reveal that the unemployment figure for ethnic minority females in Wales is 5% higher than the UK average. One in seven ethnic minority women of working age are seeking jobs but are unable to find any. This figure is just one in 23 for white women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unsurprisingly, the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jrf.org.uk\/report\/poverty-across-ethnic-groups-through-recession-and-austerity\" target=\"_blank\">poverty rate<\/a> for black and minority ethnic communities is significantly higher than for white groups. Despite high levels of academic achievement, women of colour are overrepresented in low-paid jobs and are underrepresented in higher paid, decision-making roles. Why are BAME women in these positions? Fundamentally, because they experience double discrimination based on race and gender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Dr Hade Turkmen, research partner at Cardiff&#8217;s gender equality charity <a href=\"https:\/\/chwaraeteg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Chwarae Teg<\/a>, Wales is facing a brain drain of young, educated BAME women to England, particularly cities such as Bristol or London, where they perceive they will have a better chance of success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"#InPoverty: What&#039;s it like to be a BAME woman in Wales today?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wrpkVMwKFlk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"#InPoverty: What&#039;s it like to be a BAME woman in Wales today?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wrpkVMwKFlk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Actions speak louder than words<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While diversity strategies are commonplace in most Welsh workplaces, efforts to improve inclusivity are often little more than box-ticking exercises. It\u2019s widely accepted that race and gender should be irrelevant when choosing the right person for a job. But stereotyping and affinity bias &#8211; which leads us to hire people who look like us and we can relate to &#8211;&nbsp; mean BAME women struggle to get their foot in the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;You know there&#8217;s something unfair going on but you can&#8217;t speak up about it.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The problem isn\u2019t just finding a job &#8211; workplace culture often leaves BAME women excluded. Susan Cousins, author of <em>Overcoming Everyday Racism<\/em>, points out workplace bias can be subtle and difficult to prove. &#8220;It\u2019s being talked over in a meeting or not being invited to an event,\u201d she said. \u201cYou know there\u2019s something unfair going on but you can\u2019t speak up about it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are the solutions? According to Dr Turkmen, simple measures like anonymous CVs, diverse hiring panels and unconscious bias training can help to level the playing field.&nbsp;For Susan, workplace culture needs to become more open and inclusive. \u201cIf incidents do occur, people should feel comfortable to report them,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can\u2019t be what you can\u2019t see&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another major reason for the brain drain is the lack of visible role models. \u201cRole models provide a light and instil confidence. It\u2019s important to see people like you being successful,\u201d said Dr Turkmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why medical geneticist Meena Upadhyaya OBE set up <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/no-logo\/crowdfunding-efforts-for-local-bme-project\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Welsh Asian Women Achievement Awards (opens in a new tab)\">The Welsh Asian Women Achievement Awards<\/a> (WAWAA) back in 2011. Photo: Cowshed<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One Cardiff-based company which has realised the value of a diverse workforce is <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wearecowshed.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cowshed <\/a>communication and PR agency. Earlier this year, Cowshed launched a BAME internship programme in collaboration with the The Race Council of Wales. Founder, Vicki Spencer-Francis, said, \u201cWe were a team of fairly middle class white women and I was finding it hard to represent the whole country in our campaigns &#8211; Wales isn\u2019t full of middle class white women!\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vicki hopes the scheme will become a regular thing. \u201cWe certainly haven\u2019t stopped yet. Our work is showing the benefits of employing people from diverse backgrounds.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Temeka and Nadia, two of the interns that Vicki took on are now permanent fixtures on the Cowshed team. Nadia, who was unemployed for a year before securing the internship, said, \u201cI\u2019m really happy to be part of it but it\u2019s quite sad that such internships have to exist.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Action must be taken<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employers and the government must take action to tackle low BAME employment rates and lift people out of poverty. If they don\u2019t start embracing diversity in a meaningful way, more and more talented young women will be forced to take their skills elsewhere.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chisomo was working as a regional coordinator for the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Ethnic Minorities &amp; Youth Support Team (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/eyst.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ethnic Minorities &amp; Youth Support Team<\/a> for the past few months but she is leaving Wales in the new year. \u201cI\u2019ve just started a new job at a PR agency in Bristol. I\u2019m using my degree and don\u2019t just have to speak about being a black woman all the time,\u201d she said. Unlike in Cardiff, she only applied for three jobs in Bristol before she was successful.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Faced with discrimination, bias
