It\u2019s the Land of Song, a place where music and singing\nare rooted in the souls of its people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.assembly.wales\/laid%20documents\/cr-ld12847\/cr-ld12847%20-e.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">report<\/a> published in November 2019 by the Welsh government\u2019s Committee for Culture, Welsh Language and Communications showed how the arts are failing to reach those living in poverty in Wales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/seneddresearch.blog\/2018\/03\/16\/poverty-in-wales-are-we-getting-the-full-picture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">Research<\/a> on poverty levels in Wales also showed that in 2018, 23% of people in Wales lived below the poverty line, with this percentage set to increase up to 27% by 2021. This is a significant part of the population who can\u2019t afford to go out for a cultural night with their families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the report, the Committee for Culture found that <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/in-poverty\/inpoverty-are-cuts-to-the-creative-subjects-endangering-diversity-in-the-arts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"cost (opens in a new tab)\">cost<\/a> of admittance was not the only barrier preventing people in poverty from participating in cultural activities. The cost and availability of transport and the perception of some cultural activities as \u2018not for them\u2019 were also mentioned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In particular, classical arts such as\nopera and ballet seem to struggle the most to widen their audience and to reach\npeople who come from an unprivileged background. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"#InPoverty: What are the barriers between the arts and people in poverty?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AoXhDkYc3_0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"#InPoverty: What are the barriers between the arts and people in poverty?\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AoXhDkYc3_0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The barrier of cost<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jana Holesworth, co-artistic director and\nproducer of Opera\u2019r Ddraig, a new opera company aiming to bring a fresh\napproach to opera, said that the financial aspect plays an important part in\nencouraging people to attend the opera. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA few years ago, we organised a production\nof Johann Strauss\u2019 comedic opera, <em>Die Fledermaus<\/em> at Spit &amp; Sawdust skate park near\nRumney,\u201d Jana explained. \u201cOn that same street there\u2019s a homeless shelter called\nOak House, we offered them free tickets to come and experience what was for\nmany of them, their first opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had a really good turnout and those\nwho had never experienced this kind of performance loved it!\u201d she added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, arts bodies such as the Welsh National Opera and the Mid Wales Opera, have been working on making their performances more accessible, offering tickets at a more affordable price specifically aimed at encouraging people from all backgrounds to engage. Unfortunately, this still does not take into consideration other costs such as transportation and also cultural barriers that might come into play. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>It\u2019s like if there was a wall, preventing us from getting a full grasp of opera and therefore caring about it<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The cultural barrier<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur work at the Mid Wales Opera is to\nbring accessible operatic productions around Mid Wales and reach those\ncommunities of people that don\u2019t always get to go down to Cardiff to see a\nperformance at the Millennium Centre,\u201d said Richard Studer, artistic director\nof the Mid Wales Opera company. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a few weeks ago, the company took their production of <em>Mrs Peachum\u2019s Guide to Love and Marriage <\/em>to the Blackwood Miners Institute, and in this occasion the price of the ticket was set to only a penny to encourage more people from the community to attend their performance. The courses are all at\nreasonable prices for all ages and abilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam\nLloyd-Binding, centre co-ordinator at Rubicon, said their aim was to reach\npeople from all communities in Cardiff. Rubicon has also been working on\nbreaking that barrier of cost that often gets in the way of people who would be\ninterested in learning how to dance.&nbsp;&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By\nbeing in Adamstown, Rubicon dance brings the arts at the heart of the community\nhelping people feel comfortable and breaking those cultural and social barriers\nas well as economic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nfinancial barrier is obviously a limit that needs to be addressed,\u201d he\ncontinued, \u201cbut I think that there is also a barrier in what people see. You\ncan make free all the performances you want, but if people see or feel like\nthey are not welcome, they won\u2019t engage.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam\nfinished, \u201cThe gap between the arts and poverty is still there, and everyone\nhas work to do to reach more people and make the arts more accessible to\neveryone.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Many people from
