So, what world are you voting for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s no secret that our spending habits hold power. In fact, our seemingly small consumer choices have an international impact, reaching beyond the holes in our own pockets and directly affecting human lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast fashion, more specifically, is an industry built on the exploitation of the marginalised. A global&nbsp;system&nbsp;in which those at the top of the chain are protected, and those at the bottom are run to the ground. Their work undervalued. Their rights abused.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to U.S based worker\u2019s rights organisation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidaritycenter.org\/\">Solidarity Centre<\/a>, the fashion industry employs over&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solidaritycenter.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Garment-Textile-Industry-Fact-Sheet.8.2019.pdf\">75 million<\/a> garment workers worldwide. Their research shows that 85% of these makers are women and many are in their early twenties. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the majority of factories being based in the Global South in countries such as Bangladesh, India, China and Vietnam, garment workers lack the same rights and labour law protections as those living in the West.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>While the toil of the invisible makers continues, as does our disconnection with their struggle <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As a result, workers fall victim to forced labour, dangerous working conditions, gender-based violence, poverty and low pay. As explained by documentary film, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/truecostmovie.com\">The True Cost<\/a><\/em>, garment workers are some of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/truecostmovie.com\/learn-more\/human-rights\/\">lowest paid<\/a>&nbsp;workers in the world.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the toil of the invisible makers behind our clothes continues, as does our disconnection with their struggle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed aligncenter is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We don&#39;t care if your t-shirt is made from organic cotton if the multi-billion dollar brand behind it are failing to pay their garment workers fair living wages. <br>If it&#39;s exploitative for one of us, it&#39;s exploitative for all of us.<\/p>&mdash; Venetia La Manna (@venetialamanna) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/venetialamanna\/status\/1374039072847634436?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 22, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s easiest not to think of history as a linear march towards progress, but as a tug of war between different types of power,\u201d explains author and journalist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tansyhoskins.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tansy Hoskins<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added, \u201cAt the moment, corporate power is winning the tug of war against worker\u2019s power.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fashion retailers have a large social responsibility, and as consumers, we are not exempt.&nbsp;We still have the capacity, therefore, to cast our vote for a fairer future. We still have the power to be part of the solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how you can stand in solidarity with those in the supply chain and empower the faces behind your threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collective change starts with you<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the wake of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanclothes.org\/campaigns\/past\/rana-plaza\" class=\"broken_link\">Rana Plaza<\/a>&nbsp;disaster, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.co.uk\/article\/who-made-my-clothes\">world\u2019s worst<\/a>&nbsp;garment factory collapse in history,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionrevolution.org\/\">Fashion Revolution<\/a>&nbsp;co-founder, Carry Somers, initiated a movement called #<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/explore\/tags\/whomademyclothes\/\">WhoMadeMyClothes<\/a>? The campaign called on consumers to ask questions about the individuals involved in the fashion supply chain \u2013 from fibre, to fabric, to finished product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sparking a trend beyond ethical circles, the campaign inspired people around the world to think twice about the role of fast fashion and its true cost.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The revolution doesn&#39;t stop. With a desire to take action and encourage others, she launched&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.styleandsustain.com\/\">Style &amp; Sustain<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in 2017 to inspire fashion lovers to turn to sustainable and ethical fashion and rethink their way of consuming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Raise &amp; donate funds <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Organisations such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/labourbehindthelabel.org\/\">Labour Behind the Label<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/cleanclothes.org\/\">Clean Clothes Campaign<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/remake.world\/\">Remake<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwear.org\/\">Fair Wear Foundation<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.workersrights.org\/\">Worker\u2019s Rights Consortium&nbsp;<\/a>and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fashionrevolution.org\/\">Fashion Revolution<\/a>&nbsp;are actively championing garment worker\u2019s rights across the globe.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creating change from the ground up, these organisations are among others in the field working to hold governments to account, campaign for better conditions, produce research and investigate claims.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a report by the&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2020\/jul\/09\/seven-ways-to-help-garment-workers\">Guardian<\/a><\/em>, donating and raising funds helps to make an immediate difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Buy better &amp; Additionally, the average consumer buys 60% more garments each year. Credit: Jason Briscoe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While shopping consciously won\u2019t necessarily lead large corporations to bankruptcy, it can make all the difference to a smaller business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put simply, support the brands that match your values.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>There&#8217;s a rising number of accessible brands paying living wages and operating transparent supply chains <\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStyle and sustainability are not mutually exclusive,\u201d explains Amma, from <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.styleandsustain.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Style &amp; Sustain<\/a><\/em>.&nbsp;In fact, over recent years, the rise of conscious consumerism has grown from a grassroots movement to a more mainstream way of living.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though there\u2019s still a long way to go when it comes to dismantling the disparities in the fast fashion industry, there\u2019s a rising number of accessible brands paying living wages and operating transparent supply chains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With this in mind, we&#8217;ve been given the choice to financially support the companies empowering the faces behind our threads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Put pressure on brands <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2020, non-profit organisation,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/remake.world\/\">Remake<\/a>, launched a petition demanding brands to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/payupfashion.com\/#actnow\">#PayUp<\/a>&nbsp;suppliers in full, following reports that orders were paused and pulled due to Covid-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The petition, calling on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/payupfashion.com\/tracking-brands\/\">40 major brands<\/a>&nbsp;and retailers, including the 20 most profitable companies, seeks to hold brands accountable by asking for greater transparency throughout the supply chain.
