Credit: Nikita Achanta<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">B<\/span>ooking your flight tickets, packing your bags, and grabbing a coffee at the airport as you get ready to board the plane to a country where your dreams will come true is exciting. Moving countries for education, work, or to start a new life can be daunting. But what brings you hope and joy is the freedom you, a queer person, will have to finally be yourself.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is how it can feel to come from a country where same-sex relationships are outlawed. There are&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.org\/ilga-world-releases-state-sponsored-homophobia-December-2020-update\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">69&nbsp;countries<\/a> that still criminalise homosexuality, according to&nbsp;The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association. In England and Wales, homosexuality was legalised in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parliament.uk\/about\/living-heritage\/transformingsociety\/private-lives\/relationships\/overview\/sexuality20thcentury\/\">1967<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>England and Wales are home to 56.1 million people, as per the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk\/uk-population-by-ethnicity\/national-and-regional-populations\/population-of-england-and-wales\/latest\">2011 census<\/a>. When it comes to identifying as LGBTQ+, the Office of National Statistics reports that&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/culturalidentity\/sexuality\/bulletins\/sexualidentityuk\/2019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2.7%&nbsp;of the adult UK population<\/a> does so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"494\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/13\/2021\/12\/lmzYX-percentage-of-ethnic-groups-in-the-uk-according-to-the-2011-census-2-1024x494.png\" alt=\"A chart showcasing the different ethnic minority groups in the United Kingdom. Aaron*, a scientist who moved to Cardiff from the Philippines, has lived in the UK since he was six.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>The country is far from being safe for queer and trans people<\/p><cite>Yan White<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Aaron, who identifies as bisexual, says, \u201cI have heard the classic \u2018but you are confused and are going to end up gay soon\u2019 phrase, not only from heterosexual people, but also from the queer community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He believes that it not only encourages the erasure of bisexuals from the narrative, but targets the niche group of bisexual men, thereby increasing the rates of stigma within society.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he has been grateful for the support he has received from his friends, and a group chat called &#8220;Queers in Cardiff&#8221;. The latter has allowed him to meet and share his experiences with other queer people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1SzbJE3N5bHteD4WMvgiFltpTMtpxFo_m&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1SzbJE3N5bHteD4WMvgiFltpTMtpxFo_m&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<h6 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Above: This map can be used to track safe spaces for queer people of colour, including the organisations mentioned in this feature. Credit: Nikita Achanta<\/h6>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Seeking support elsewhere<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the 2021 UK Black Pride Survey, only&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5c7687174d87112ad57fc819\/t\/6194f30dcea6433f35a14f77\/1637151508280\/WWBH_FINAL_2021_v2-compressed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">25%&nbsp;of respondents<\/a> felt that queer spaces were welcoming for people of colour. This number is concerning as, in comparison, 67% of white LGBTQ+ individuals felt these spaces were comforting.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But all hope is not lost. South Wales is home to grassroots organisations that have been working towards achieving equality for people of colour of all sexual identities. Culturally diverse communities can seek help or share their experiences of homophobia at local safe spaces.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-black-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><em>Learn more about being a better ally here<\/em><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Being an ally to queer people of colour\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PQ12sH6IOug?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Being an ally to queer people of colour\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PQ12sH6IOug?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/racecouncilcymru.org.uk\/\">Race Council Cymru<\/a>&nbsp;is one of them. The organisation focuses on combating racial prejudice, victimisation, and violence in Wales, while offering mental health advice. Director Kay Denyer explains the number of ethnic minorities who have approached the organisation over the past three years is approximately 2,000. With regard to having experienced homophobia, five people under the age of 30 have reported it to the organisation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Black Pride Survey also states that, based on their ethnicity, 49% of the Asian respondents have experienced some form of discrimination or harassment in LGBTQ+ spaces. It is, therefore, not surprising that ethnic minorities are more anxious about freely expressing their sexual identity, as Kay concurs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>Being open could subject them to conversion therapy, rape and imprisonment<\/p><cite>Ele Hicks<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Another organisation that promotes equality for all, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.diversecymru.org.uk\/\">Diverse Cymru<\/a>, agrees. Policy, engagement and research manager Ele Hicks notes that many refugees and asylum seekers are fleeing because of threats of violence based on their sexuality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ele commented, \u201cThey come from backgrounds where being open could subject them to conversion therapy, so-called corrective rape, and imprisonment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">The times they are a-changin\u2019<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Where does change then begin? According to Kay, \u201cEducation and accurate information taught widely in all schools and better representation across media can help make the UK a safer place for [people of colour] to express their identity.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/thequeeremporium\/\">The Queer Emporium<\/a>, on the other hand, believes the country has a \u201creally long way to go\u201d when it comes to eliminating homophobia and transphobia against people of colour. \u201cThe country is far from being safe for queer and trans people,\u201d said the founder and manager, Yan White.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Located on St. Mary\u2019s Street, the shop provides a space to several minority sellers and artists to showcase their work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe emporium reflects the wider part of the LGBTQ+ community, across the UK and particularly in Cardiff,\u201d Yan commented, \u201cWe have quite a lot of visits from BAME people, and from refugees as well. But I have heard many stories of queer people from different backgrounds experiencing homophobia locally.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for Diverse Cymru, Ele emphasises on the need to ensure that people are not split into individual characteristics. \u201cAs a society, we focus on race separately to sexuality,\u201d Ele continued, \u201cThis approach means that solutions only work for people with one characteristic, not several.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The organisation provides mental health support for black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups, and also to \u201crefugees and asylum seekers due to the trauma they are fleeing,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While they do not run services specifically for refugees and asylum seekers, Ele recommends the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.trinitycentre.wales\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trinity Centre<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oasiscardiff.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oasis Cardiff<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/glittercymru.org.uk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glitter Cymru<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">Long road ahead<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>It is time to end homophobia and bring an end to <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/2020\/12\/17\/transphobic-hate-crimes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hate crimes<\/a> against people of colour. The feeling of home can be attained only when one is truly safe. The voices of black, Asian, and minority ethnic groups must be amplified.
