Image credit: Robyn Quick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>As the staff at board game caf\u00e9 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chanceandcounters.com\/cardiff\/\">Chance &amp; Counters<\/a> prepare for another busy day before they open, manager Rhys Chamberlain organises the collection of over 650 games with a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To a casual observer, it seems this is the job Rhys was born for, but it was a long journey to find his way to the world of board games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Listen to the story here:<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"How Cardiff&#039;s Board Game Cafe Provided A New World by CardiffJomec\" width=\"1200\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1377068206&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=1200\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"How Cardiff&#039;s Board Game Cafe Provided A New World by CardiffJomec\" width=\"1200\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F1377068206&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;maxwidth=1200\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Starting from square one<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Board games were the last thing on Rhys\u2019 mind when he began a theatre technology degree at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a strange environment \u2013 the actors were weirder than we were,\u201d he reflected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After finding theatre work in pantos, doing a small tour with a company in Bury St Edmunds and working at University of Cambridge, he decided to leave the industry entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 29-year-old said: \u201cIt was such a ruthless industry. So many amazing people go on to achieve nothing and so many mediocre people go on to achieve greatness or, at least, financial stability.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Originally from York, Rhys moved around in pursuit of work, but he struggled to find anywhere that was fulfilling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One day after a bad shift at a bar in Birmingham, he saw a Facebook ad for the role of manager at the local branch of board game cafe Chance &amp; Counters and leapt at the opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The world of board games opens up&#8230;<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, Rhys discovered a love of board games and the community that they created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cLike everyone, I played them at Christmas when I was a kid and with my grandparents. Then when I was at university, I started to play board games more with my housemates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a bit of a nerd all round so I thought it would be my thing!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He explained that since working at the Birmingham site, he became hooked on the activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While living with his best friend and their fianc\u00e9 during lockdown, Rhys found enjoyment in longer form board games to distract from the chaos outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe bought long games such as Pandemic where you get a month\u2019s play out of each series. They gave us something to communally sit down and do as a group,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In April 2021, the Cardiff site for Chance &amp; Counters found itself in financial trouble because of lockdown. Rhys bought half of the property and moved to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">The future of board games<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Since finding a life and community in board games, Rhys has not looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that re-opening after the pandemic has been a challenge, but he is happy with his decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c&#8217;The world of board games has been my first work environment to feel like home,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We have been doing really well, it\u2019s been getting busier and busier. Now we\u2019re just trying to settle down and run more events for the run up to Christmas,\u201d he smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that unlike pubs and bars, winter is the peak season for board game cafes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said that board games are \u201cvery much a winter sport\u201d, unlike bars and restaurants that focus more on the summer months for their events and income.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhys added that customers are increasingly looking to<a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/2022\/11\/15\/board-game-cafes-become-increasingly-popular-in-cost-of-living-crisis\/\"> save money<\/a>, and Chance &amp; Counters offers the opportunity for people to try games out instead of buying them in the increasingly expensive game market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe board gaming market is ever expanding and reaching out to a wider audience than ever before. There really is something for everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Rhys\u2019 top three game recommendations for new players:<\/mark><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">Root<\/mark><\/strong> \u2013 Rhys\u2019 personal favourite, an asymmetrical heavy strategy game similar to Risk where every player is playing a slightly different game.
