font-family:Arial,sans-serif; font-size:14px; font-style:normal; font-weight:normal; line-height:17px; text-decoration:none;\" target=\"_blank\">A post shared by Cal Ellis (@cal_ellis_)<\/a><\/p><\/div><\/blockquote><script async src=\"\/\/platform.instagram.com\/en_US\/embeds.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps this is partly to do with the language, and as a non-Welsh speaker, Cal admits he often doesn\u2019t feel very Welsh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t feel like a Welsh place, because most of the people in Cardiff aren\u2019t Welsh, they\u2019re from all over the world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps this is true, as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/news\/news\/census2021demographyandinternationalmigrationstatisticsforwales\">new ONS data<\/a>&nbsp;from the 2021 Census shows that Cardiff is the Welsh local authority with the highest proportion of non-UK born residents, with one in six residents born overseas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the diverse mix of people is what Cal loves most about his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat is it to be from anywhere?\u201d he says. \u201cThe biggest boundary to cross is never where someone\u2019s from, it\u2019s always the sort of person they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m proud to be from Wales, but I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve got much of a nationalist streak in me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignfull has-text-align-left\"><blockquote><p>The biggest boundary to cross is never where someone&#8217;s from, it&#8217;s always the sort of person they are<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Mixed response<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The reaction to the poem was more than Cal could have dreamed, and he received plenty of Instagram messages from people who resonated with his words, something he doesn\u2019t take for granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says, \u201cIt captured the essence of what others feel. That\u2019s really humbling, and really cool that you can be the articulation of someone else\u2019s thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cal even ended up attending the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/altcardiff\/2021\/12\/13\/one-in-three-people-in-wales-will-be-affected-by-the-housing-crisis-and-homelessness\/\">Shelter Cymru<\/a> People and Homes Conference in June as part of a panel on gentrification and social justice, an achievement he still sounds surprised about.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The response to the poem wasn\u2019t completely positive, with some of the copies being torn down, but Cal likes that his work split public opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou know you\u2019ve made a good impact when people like it and people hate it,\u201d he says, \u201cbecause that controversy is making people think and challenging them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what\u2019s next for Cal Ellis? \u201cThere\u2019s more writing, there\u2019s exploring new mediums,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s something I love doing, the adventure of it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One thing\u2019s for sure, this jack of all trades won\u2019t be boxing
