Credit: Robyn Quick<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Laura Tofarides wanted to work in the animation industry since she was first given a clunky camcorder as a child. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI figured out that if you take a picture of something and then move it a little bit, it comes to life. I just thought stop-motion animation was magic,\u201d said the freelance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=wVjMFU11hVA\">stop-motion<\/a> animator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Laura is a full-time working professional in the animation industry, she has more to consider than the technical and creative aspect of the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She must also think about how each of her productions affects the planet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Cardiff, the film and TV industry is becoming increasingly popular, and South Wales is home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tvbeurope.com\/business\/wales-launches-50-million-hub-for-tv-and-film-innovation\">third largest media sector<\/a> in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/gov.wales\/climate-change-targets-and-carbon-budgets#:~:text=Monitoring%20progress-,Net%20zero%20pathway,of%205%2Dyear%20carbon%20budgets.\">Senedd Cymru <\/a>aims to reach net zero by 2050, meaning they want to cancel out the amount of greenhouse gases produced by human activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/cop27\">COP27<\/a> throughout November this year did not provide clear guidance for the film or animation industries specifically to reduce their carbon footprint, answers for the next generation filmmakers on how to be climate conscious and creative are more sought after than ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"has-vivid-purple-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\"><strong>What needs to change<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiffanimation.com\/\">Cardiff Animation Festival<\/a>, a biennial celebration of animation, has a dedicated following locally and internationally. Throughout the pandemic, organisers of the festival researched how the animation industry in Wales could reduce the amount of carbon emissions in their workplaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiffanimation.com\/11-lessons-from-lockdown\">report<\/a> which identifies the challenges that the animation industry will face in the future. From this, they predicted that working from home and cloud-storage was much more energy efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/clothcat.com\/\">Cloth Cat Animation<\/a>, a 2D animation studio based in Cardiff, is one of the companies included in the report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-vivid-purple-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background\"><blockquote><p><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">People would be shocked how carbon intensive the process of making a film is<\/mark><\/p><cite><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-purple-color\">Chris Hill<\/mark><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Rennie, company director, said: \u201cI was drawn to Welsh animation partly because I grew up here, but also because we have a proud history of animation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe are a creative country with a small but active animation community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rennie said the path towards being a carbon neutral workplace became a lot clearer from the report\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The studio moved to working-from-home during the pandemic and have stuck to this post-lockdown, as it is projected to reduce their carbon emissions by 19%. For example, if an animation company is only renting their offices, they have no say on the energy provider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe are reliant on what they decide.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ffilm Cyrmu launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/ffilmcymruwales.com\/funding-and-training\/green-cymru-challenge-fund\">Green Cymru<\/a> Challenge Fund in July 2021 to help companies overcome this barrier. Chris Hill, Ffilm Cyrmu\u2019s green manager, said although the programme is in its early stages, there has been a positive reception from the film community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cPeople would be shocked how carbon intensive the process of making a film is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe audience only sees the end result. You can scrape clay off models to re-use but the plastic and metal beneath the surface cannot be recycled,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is small changes like this that mean we can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She may not have envisaged re-using and saving material from her models when she received her first camcorder, but Laura\u2019s passion for the future of the animation industry and the planet continue to fuel her work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is creators like Laura who will lead the next generation of animation and ensure that productions are as sustainable as
