Turn your back on romantic partnership and society assumes you\u2019ll be spending the New Year alone, sprawled across the sofa with a bottle of rioja, belting out the lyrics to Celine Dion\u2019s All By Myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The notion that single women\u2019s lives are inherently tinged with sadness or pity purely because they are without a romantic partner feels unjust. Yet, according to recent data, our relationship status may significantly influence how lonely we feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figures from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.wales\/loneliness-national-survey-wales-april-2022-march-2023-html\">Welsh government<\/a>&nbsp;reveal that 13% of the population experiences loneliness to some degree. Cardiff, however, exceeds both the Welsh and UK averages, with more residents reporting feeling \u201coften or always\u201d lonely.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While factors like financial hardship and mental health issues contribute to this statistic, one of the most telling indicators is relationship status: single individuals are nearly twice as likely to feel emotionally lonely compared to their married counterparts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Turning down \u2018I do\u2019<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>While some may still view singledom, particularly for women, as a temporary phase before finding \u201cMr. Right,\u201d modern trends reveal this perception as outdated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In England and Wales,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/marriagecohabitationandcivilpartnerships\/bulletins\/marriagesinenglandandwalesprovisional\/2021and2022#:~:text=Marriage%20rates%20returned%20to%20pre,unmarried%20men%20and%20women%2C%20respectively.\">marriage rates<\/a>&nbsp;among women have plummeted, dropping by over 50% in the past 40 years. More recently online, a growing number of women are expressing their intent to leave the dating scene, and the prospect of marriage, entirely behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sandas Raza, founder of female-focused events company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/girlzclwb\/\">Girlz Clwb<\/a>, said that she\u2019s seen a resurgence of women-only hangouts around Cardiff, linking this to a more general rise in independence among women.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cAs women, we\u2019ve realised we don\u2019t need men to make us happy. We can go on dates with the girls, we don\u2019t need to keep waiting for a man to sweep us off our feet and take us to all these nice places.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For some women, like contributors to TikTok\u2019s #4B movement, the decision to stop dating men is a bold act of defiance against patriarchal violence. For others, it\u2019s about reclaiming agency after years of disillusionment with dating. Yet, for many, it\u2019s simply a matter of personal preference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this decision can feel liberating, it also carries the risk of loneliness in a society where traditional expectations persist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As author Georgina Lawton writes in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/article\/2024\/aug\/21\/young-single-women-lonelier-than-ever-community#:~:text=For%20those%20of%20us%20who,at%20the%20expense%20of%20community.\">The Guardian<\/a>: \u201cFor those of us who are single by choice, who don\u2019t want kids and don\u2019t date, the constant gendered expectations of what life should like look by a certain point can feel relentless and isolating \u2013 and often come at the expense of community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"sbi-embed-wrap\"><blockquote class=\"instagram-media sbi-embed\" data-instgrm-captioned data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DDZmp_sNY2M\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; Different from flatmates living under a landlord, communities like these are self-governing, meaning residents are the key decision makers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the term &#8220;communal living&#8221; encompasses a broad range of housing structures, the common thread is that they\u2019re made up of people who purposefully choose to live together, often under a set of shared values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Swansea-based Christine Haigh, who joined Golem Housing Cooperative six years ago, spoke to the benefits of this mode of living, particularly for those who choose not to go down the path of a traditional relationship.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cI&#8217;ve like spent most of the time living [in Golem] being single. However, data only tells part of the story. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amy Bowen,&nbsp;a resident of the Christian community Hilfield Friary in Dorset, credits her experience with helping her grow in confidence and improve her mental health, saying: \u201cOverall, if I look at where I was a year and a half ago compared to now, I\u2019m a different person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Bowen also notes that living in close quarters with others comes with challenge. The lack of personal space in shared areas can be overwhelming at times, she explains, and despite the close friendships she\u2019s made, friction is sometimes unavoidable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even for the most enthusiastic participants, communal living can be difficult. In order for it to be a worthwhile endeavour, a sense of alignment with a particular community\u2019s ethos and lifestyle is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without this compatibility, entering into this way of life may lead to further disconnect and isolation, rather than fulfilment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Redefining happiness<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the challenges, communal living&nbsp;presents an opportunity to reimagine what happiness, connection and relationships look like&nbsp;for single women in Cardiff and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it&#8217;s no&nbsp;quick fix for curing loneliness, it can offer security, support and a shared sense of purpose&nbsp;that, in many ways, mimics what a successful marriage provides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Communal living might not be the answer for all single women,&nbsp;but for the growing number who refuse to wait for Mr. Darcy to come and sweep them off their feet,&nbsp;it poses a rather hopeful alternative.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:36px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-luminous-dusk-gradient-background has-background has-large-font-size\">For the girls: Finding community in Cardiff<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Girlz Clwb <\/strong>&#8211; A safe space for finding female friends.
