Many Cardiff Shops Face an Existential Crisis

Many businesses in Cardiff are facing higher bills than ever as a result of the energy crisis.

Energy subsidies provided by the government have not helped much, many shops in Cardiff are still facing a crisis.

The Ashton Fish shop in Cardiff Market has to pay very high bills this year. Employees here say they are worried about the shop’s future. Although the UK government has helped them with some bills, they want more support.

Michael Clayton is one of the staff in the shop. He says they have to use many fridges to keep their seafood fresh. He says,” Government support can only help alleviate some of the burden, but they still have to pay a lot of bills.”

Praya Thai restaurant on Churchill Way opened one year ago. With a big kitchen their energy bills are high, and they must pay twice as much as they used to. The restaurant’s owner says government support has not solved their problems.

”The previous pandemic and the current high bills have hit our business hard and we are just keeping our heads above water and hopefully we can sustain it.” Soraya Bell says.
