Betty Campbell born on 6 November 1934 was the first black head teacher and a Welsh community activist.
The statue was unveiled in 2021, made by sculptor Eve Lewis and is in Central Square.
She was an important leader in the fight for social justice, equality and even described as “a true pioneer” by the former First Minister of Wales Carwyn Jones for her contribution to education as well as the black community.
Campbell was dedicated to education and worked to promote inclusivity. She fought for the rights of the marginalized.
She served on the Home Office Race Advisory Committee. Campbell published research on education, received an MBE in 2003 and was honoured by Cardiff Metropolitan University.
The statue celebrates Campbell’s achievements and aims to inspire young people. It also highlights the need for diversity in public community spaces.
