{"id":22358,"date":"2019-01-29T17:35:48","date_gmt":"2019-01-29T17:35:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=22358"},"modified":"2019-01-29T17:35:48","modified_gmt":"2019-01-29T17:35:48","slug":"proposals-for-new-childrens-mental-health-task-force-reaches-the-senedd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/proposals-for-new-childrens-mental-health-task-force-reaches-the-senedd\/","title":{"rendered":"Proposal for new children\u2019s mental health task force reaches the Senedd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>The Senedd\u2019s Petitions Committee has considered a campaign to create a National Task Force to look into the causes children&#8217;s mental health.<\/strong><br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\nThe proposal was put forward by The National Organisation for Children&#8217;s Mental Health.<br \/>\nIn response to the petition, a spokesperson for the Welsh Government said it already had a Joint Ministerial Task and Finish Group which it says \u201cbrings together key partners across health and education [\u2026] to ensure our resources are targeted to have the maximum benefit.\u201d<br \/>\nBut the Director of the social enterprise behind the the petition, Geraint Evans, says that \u201cinstead of trying to just focus on increasing the resilience of children and young people\u201d the idea behind the task force is to look at root causes of the issue and recommend preventative measures.<br \/>\nSome Assembly Members, such as Conservative AM David Melding, have welcomed the proposal.<br \/>\nMr Melding, who has previously spoken about his own struggles with anxiety and depression, says the idea of \u201cbringing together people that are directly affected by this, and getting them to come up with proposals for the Assembly to work through\u201d is \u201can excellent development\u201d.<br \/>\nThe Welsh Government has today maintained that mental health in children and young people \u201cis an absolute priority\u201d and that it recently announced more than \u00a37m to support children\u2019s mental health, including in schools.<br \/>\nRob Williams, Director of the National Association of Head Teachers &#8211; which supports the idea behind the petition &#8211; says a variety of factors contribute to the \u201ccomplex\u201d landscape of mental health issues for young people in Wales. These include social media and \u201cmanifestations of austerity issues which have put pressure onto families\u201d.<br \/>\nThe Welsh Government has recently updated its 10-year strategy for mental health for people of all ages.
