{"id":24794,"date":"2020-02-14T17:36:57","date_gmt":"2020-02-14T17:36:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=24794"},"modified":"2020-08-19T13:32:43","modified_gmt":"2020-08-19T12:32:43","slug":"anger-over-ruperra-castle-development-plans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/anger-over-ruperra-castle-development-plans\/","title":{"rendered":"Anger over Ruperra Castle  development plans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Plans to turn parts of the Ruperra Castle estate near Caerphilly into apartments have been met with anger by local groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The private owner of the castle, Mr. Al Khafaji, has submitted proposals to Caerphilly Council to convert the stable buildings into eight apartments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the plan does not include any money to renovate the collapsing castle itself.&nbsp;<br> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Al Khafaji sees the application \u201cas a means of injecting life into the castle grounds while bringing the stable block back into refurbished condition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Chairwoman of the Ruperra Castle Preservation Trust, Kay Powell, said: \u201cWe feel that the castle and the estate are very important to Wales and Welsh history and deserve better than a piecemeal development of one bit at a time.\u201d &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wayne David, MP for Caerphilly and\nPresident of the Local History Society, told CJS News: \u201cI&#8217;m approaching CADW\nfor advice to see if anything can be done about the outbuildings\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\n\u201cI would hope that the\nlocal authority before it decides to give planning permission will see if there&#8217;s any possibility of preserving them for the benefit of the community as a whole.\u200b<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat&#8217;s\na bigger issue, clearly we have put the argument forward for some time for the castle to be brought into public ownership and resources spent on it but now that&#8217;s not happening\u200b.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\nbest hope is to maintain or keep the outbuilding in its integrity to stop it falling down\u200b.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Michaelston-Y-Fedw Community Council approve of the idea in principle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Nigel Hallett said: \u201cAs I understand the planning proposal, here\u2019s somebody who is going to put some money into it [the castle].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnd if he does that and the manages to save, say, the stable block, then I find it hard to see what the problem would be with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caerphilly Council are still yet to comment on whether the application will be given the go-ahead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Plans to turn parts of the Ruperra Castle estate near Caerphilly into apartments have been met with anger by local groups.
