Right now was meant to be the busy season so in reality I\u2019m making about 40% of what I would during normal summer,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the focus has been on universal credit and as students you don\u2019t have access to that. I\u2019ve just been watching everyone else being sorted but [they\u2019re] leaving out a key demographic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-2-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/jasneet2-485x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25717\" width=\"285\" height=\"231\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/jasneet2-485x394.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25717\" width=\"285\" height=\"231\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignleft\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;I&#8217;m worried about the financial strain on my parents&#8221;<\/p><cite><br>JASNEET SAMRAI, PROSPECTIVE STUDENT<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Jasneet Samrai who starts at Aberystwyth University this September also feels left out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had the furlough scheme and self-employed scheme which obviously benefit adults, but we don\u2019t really see much for students, especially considering students are the most likely to be laid off in this crisis,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As her student finance will only just cover rent, she expected to find a job when she moves to Aberystwyth. But with student-heavy sectors such as retail and hospitality amongst the hardest hit by coronavirus, it looks less likely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m quite worried in terms of how it will all pan out. Some weeks he would only earn \u00a320 but even that &#8220;would have been amazing in these circumstances&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t return to my father\u2019s house as he and my grandparents are all high risk. I\u2019ve been in halls for months now by myself, paying for rent and food without any other income which is starting to worry me a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/MP3forOnlineArticle-1.mp3\"><\/audio><figcaption> <strong>Listen to the radio package featuring interviews with students and NUS Wales.<\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Many students rely on their parents for financial support, but according to NUS Wales almost half say that the income of someone who supports them has been impacted by COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome students are lucky enough to have parents that support them through university, but obviously if those parents are on furlough, have lost their jobs, or have reduced hours, even just one parent\u2026\u201d said NUS Wales President Becky Ricketts. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThen you get students who are from care backgrounds, are carers themselves, are international, are from single-parent families\u2026 these are going to be some of the hardest hit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are choices between heating and eating for some students.
