{"id":27690,"date":"2021-02-19T18:01:11","date_gmt":"2021-02-19T18:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=27690"},"modified":"2021-02-20T09:57:46","modified_gmt":"2021-02-20T09:57:46","slug":"january-lockdown-has-been-irrecoverable-nightmare-says-cardiff-toy-shop-owner","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/january-lockdown-has-been-irrecoverable-nightmare-says-cardiff-toy-shop-owner\/","title":{"rendered":"January lockdown has been \u201cirrecoverable nightmare\u201d, says Cardiff toy shop owner"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cAfter being in business for so many years, I\u2019ve never seen such catastrophic times,\u201d  says Philip Kaye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t tell you how many sleepless nights I\u2019ve had, knowing I\u2019ve got the livelihood of 17 people and their families on my shoulders.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shop owner Mr Kaye fears that he current lockdown it could be the \u201cfinal straw\u201d for his Toys N Things store on Wellfield Road, which has traded for 32 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve literally had to close the store with zero income,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s an irrecoverable nightmare.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Calls for clear plan and financial package<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Federation of Small Businesses is calling on the Welsh Government to provide a clear plan of how traders such as Toys N Things will re-open in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes after First Minister, Mark Drakeford\u2019s announced today that non-essential retail and close contact shops could re-open in March, but that will be decided after the next review in three weeks\u2019 time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the meantime, the Government needs to sit down with businesses and tell them what is expected, what are the regulations are going to be in place and how can we make these places safe,\u201d says Ben Cottam, the head of the Federation in Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Cottam is also calling for a new package of support for small businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe want to see an extension of the Business Rates Relief support, like has been announced for Scottish businesses this week,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome businesses have been shut for much longer that expected and that\u2019s why they desperately need support\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for the Welsh Government said \u201cWe are providing \u00a3650m to help businesses through the December to March period.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our package of business support is the most generous in the UK and we will continue to review our options for supporting firms further.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Cottam thinks that the decision taken by Mark Drakeford today is wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe overwhelming response from our members is that they want this lockdown to be the last one.
