The<\/strong> budget, once approved, will come into action from April for the next financial year.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cardiff Council\u2019s draft budget for 2022-23 has been published and it contains a proposed 1.9% Council Tax rise. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The budget proposal<\/a> will go to cabinet for approval on Thursday and will be finalised via a vote on the March 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One section of the budget which has is being contested by some councillors is the proposed 1.9% increase in council tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This would mean that homes in band A would see their bill go up by 48p to \u00a31.38 a month, whilst those in band I would see their bill go to \u00a34.84 a month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leader of the Conservative party, Adrian Robson, said: \u201cI think a Council Tax rise is absolutely avoidable this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Cardiff Council have had the biggest settlement from the Welsh government [and] they\u2019ve had an increase of 10.7% in the money given to them by Welsh government which is the second {largest} of any council in Wales.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The settlement from the Welsh Government grant accounts for about 73% of the council\u2019s entire budget – an extra \u00a352.6 million in cash terms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Labour councillor for Cathays, Norma Mackie, said: \u201cIdeally we wouldn\u2019t want a rise at all, but in practicality that\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One factor that the council has had to consider is the removal of the Welsh Government\u2019s Covid 19 hardship fund, which the council has received for the previous two years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means the council will have to cope with financial pressures of COVID-19 without the additional funding from Welsh Government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The draft budget also proposes spending for many other public services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It includes \u00a39.3 million for schools, \u00a323.9 million for social services and \u00a32.4 million for youth services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will also includes plans for \u00a3400 million in funding to build social housing over the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If approved, the tax hike, as well as the rest of the budget proposals, will come into effect from April 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
