{"id":29528,"date":"2022-03-10T18:30:14","date_gmt":"2022-03-10T18:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=29528"},"modified":"2022-03-10T18:30:16","modified_gmt":"2022-03-10T18:30:16","slug":"cardiffs-new-multi-million-pound-cycleways-not-being-used","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/cardiffs-new-multi-million-pound-cycleways-not-being-used\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff\u2019s new multi-million pound cycleways &#8216;not being used&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Cardiff Council&#8217;s new multi-million-pound cycleways are confusing and cyclists are not using them, according to campaigners.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past year alone the council has spent more than \u00a39 million on the building of five new cycleways across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council has been adding new infrastructure such as segregated cycle lanes, cycle junctions and individual traffic lights for bicycle users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/resident\/Parking-roads-and-travel\/travel\/cycle-super-highways\/Pages\/default.aspx\">website <\/a>says this network will help to connect communities to the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> wants to see more people choosing to cycle rather than drive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dan Allsobrook from campaign group <a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffcyclecity.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardiff Cycle City<\/a> explained: &#8220;There\u2019s some pinch points, especially in the city centre where it\u2019s not joined up and you kind of get thrown out onto a busy road and the cycleway just comes to an end. There is no obvious way to go next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There are also parts of the city which are really important, like the railway station (Cardiff Central) which doesn\u2019t have that kind of infrastructure.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Castle Street, for example, cyclists wanting to cross from one side of the road to the other have to get off their bikes and use a pedestrian crossing. There\u2019s lots of work ongoing in the city to widen the network and put in these so-called Superhighways. Look how busy it is (Newport Road in the morning), look at this cycle lane that crosses this crossroads. It&#8217;s dangerous. As a cyclist, you\u2019ve got to be really careful. They\u2019re (cycle lanes) often blocked off. There\u2019s so much change. It just doesn\u2019t seem to be very well coordinated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for Cardiff Council said: &#8220;The cycleway network is being strategically built and is far from complete.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month there were calls for improvements to the visibility of cycle lane kerbs after pedestrians tripped and injured themselves when crossing <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/2022\/02\/22\/cycleway-kerbs-a-trip-hazard-for-pedestrians\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wellfield Road<\/a> in Roath.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fuel prices are continuing to rise and which means many commuters are moving onto two wheels to save money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Deputy Minister for Climate Change said \u201cWhen prices go up, people pause for thought to think about the way they&#8217;re doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee Waters MS said: \u201cWe know that 10% of car journeys are under a mile in length and yet people drive them and over half of car journeys are five miles or less. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These are distances that can be done by bike and the fuel prices may well make people think about the habits they\u2019ve formed and whether or not they should change those habits.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the past year alone the council has spent more than \u00a39 million on the building of five new cycleways across the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":785,"featured_media":29532,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[35],"tags":[21,38,34,104],"coauthors":[823],"class_list":["post-29528","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest","tag-cardiff","tag-cardiff-council","tag-wales","tag-welsh-government"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Cardiff\u2019s new multi-million pound cycleways &#039;not being used&#039; - CJS News<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"A cycling campaign group says Cardiff Council&#039;s \u00a39 million pound cycleways are confusing.
