{"id":30811,"date":"2023-01-24T16:32:10","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T16:32:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=30811"},"modified":"2023-01-24T17:32:53","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T17:32:53","slug":"cervical-cancer-prevention-week-charities-stress-the-importance-of-the-hpv-vaccine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/cervical-cancer-prevention-week-charities-stress-the-importance-of-the-hpv-vaccine\/","title":{"rendered":"Cervical Cancer Prevention Week: Charities stress the importance of the HPV vaccine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>Reported by Anwen Sleath and Colm Tan<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cancer charities in Wales say that a drop in vaccinations could lead to more people getting cervical cancer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/statistics\/human-papillomavirus-hpv-vaccine-coverage-estimates-in-england-2021-to-2022\">UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) report<\/a>&nbsp;on the routine human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine programme for 2021 to 2022, shows a decrease of more than 7%, compared to the previous academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Greg Pycroft, the Policy and Public Affairs Manager at Tenovus Cancer Care, says that the decrease could be explained by &#8220;a significant number of teenagers [who] missed their first dose when the HPV vaccine was paused during COVID&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says that  &#8220;cervical cancer is one of those rare cancers where there is a real possibility that we could actually end it. Her brother says that if the doctors had properly investigated her symptoms, then his sister &#8220;would still be alive today&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Women typically cannot be tested for the disease until the age of 25. Last year the Welsh Government also extended the intervals between screenings from 3 years to 5.
