{"id":31060,"date":"2023-02-03T12:58:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-03T12:58:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=31060"},"modified":"2023-02-03T12:58:06","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T12:58:06","slug":"wonderful-my-cymru-my-shirt-mural-replaced-ahead-of-six-nations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wonderful-my-cymru-my-shirt-mural-replaced-ahead-of-six-nations\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Wonderful&#8217; My Cymru My Shirt mural replaced ahead of Six Nations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The change comes as the WRU is being scrutinised over sexism claims <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE spray cans were set aside and a new mural in Quay Street was finally completed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wall of Mexican restaurant La Pantera now showcases portraits of players from each of the Six Nations teams, including  Wales\u2019 George North and former Welsh international rugby union captain, Sam Warburton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artwork is an advert for watch company and tournament sponsor Breitling. Half of the wall is taken up by a painting of a watch, where it previously had a portrait of a woman of colour.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people say that they will miss the previous mural, which despite being an advert for Adidas, was popular with Welsh football fans, among others.  The &#8216;My Cymru, My Shirt&#8217; artwork was commissioned by Adidas during Wales&#8217; European Championship campaign and painted by local graffiti artist <a href=\"https:\/\/rmer1.com\/\">Rmer One<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">UnifyCreative announced last night that their &#39;My Cymru My Shirt&#39; mural on Cardiff&#39;s Quay St will be painted over \ud83d\ude22 <br><br>It made for a wonderful backdrop within the city with an even more wonderful message behind it \ud83d\udc4f\ud83c\udff4\udb40\udc67\udb40\udc62\udb40\udc77\udb40\udc6c\udb40\udc73\udb40\udc7f <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Poo4qhKCfG\">pic.twitter.com\/Poo4qhKCfG<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Welsh Football Fans (@welshfootball_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/welshfootball_\/status\/1618203871721164800?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 25, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The old design was created by artists Yusuf Ismail and Shawqi Hasson from Cardiff&#8217;s creative collective <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unifycreative_\">Unify<\/a>. The group collected photos of inspirational people of colour wearing Wales football shirts to champion diversity in the game. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, Unify said that the response to the mural had been &#8220;beyond their wildest expectations&#8221; and had helped to create &#8220;a unified sense of belonging&#8221; in Welsh sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The artists are pleased that the mural lasted for 18 months on the Quay Street Wall. Yet many people feel that the timing of the change is poor, with the Welsh Rugby Union under intense scrutiny amid allegations of misogyny and racism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">With the coming down of the My Cymru, My shirt Mural we wanted to say a few words as a statement reflecting on a special moment &amp; thank everyone who supported us.  plenty more projects in the pipeline that we hope will inspire change in the same way <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/mycymrumyshirt?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#mycymrumyshirt<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Ogh7u05GO9\">pic.twitter.com\/Ogh7u05GO9<\/a><\/p>&mdash; unifycreative (@unifycreative_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/unifycreative_\/status\/1617877076555730947?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 24, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>It was recently revealed that the former head of Welsh women&#8217;s rugby had considered suicide because of a &#8220;toxic culture&#8221; of sexism at the WRU. Chief Executive Steve Phillips resigned over the controversy on Sunday and plans have been announced to modernise the 12-person board to include at least five women.
