{"id":31539,"date":"2023-02-21T17:16:39","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T17:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=31539"},"modified":"2023-02-21T17:16:41","modified_gmt":"2023-02-21T17:16:41","slug":"a-decade-long-ordeal-the-former-mining-town-plagued-by-mould","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/a-decade-long-ordeal-the-former-mining-town-plagued-by-mould\/","title":{"rendered":"A decade long ordeal &#8211; The former mining town plagued by mould"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>by Tomos Rogers &amp; Iona Brunker<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2013 people in the former mining town of Caerau in the Llynfi Valley have lived in houses riddled with damp and mould.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>25 households signed up to the Welsh government\u2019s Arbed scheme and a further 79 signed up through the UK government\u2019s Community Energy Saving Programme to make their homes more energy efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But poor building work has led to damp throughout their houses, creating both physical and mental pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Our house have been gutted to a shell and redone all new walls, all new plasters, all new ceilings, all new electric. And now my house is soaking. <\/p>\n<cite>Marion Hobbs, Caerau Resident<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image-293x391.jpeg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31566\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image-225x300.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2023\/02\/Image-293x391.jpeg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Hat owned by a Caerau resident covered in mould.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Last November the Welsh Government announced more than two and a half million pounds of funding to address failed wall insulation works at a hundred and four homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a letter to residents earlier this month Bridgend County Borough Council also announced that three jobs would be created to help manage the repairs including a community liaison post to work directly with residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the people of Caerau say that should be someone affected by the poor work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>They really need somebody from this community who knows what&#8217;s going on and to be a person that is in the middle of that really like, you know, that will be able to speak to the residents, to the council&#8221;<\/p>\n<cite>Rhiannon Goodall<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Bridgend Council say they take responsibility for the 25 homes under the Welsh Government&#8217;s Arbed scheme but not those that were a part of the UK Government&#8217;s  CES programme. The residents dispute this and say they have evidence to the contrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An independent town councillor in Caerau says the people in the area feel underrepresented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>They are just under a cloud, continuously under a cloud of the house that they&#8217;ve bought.
