{"id":31922,"date":"2023-03-21T10:37:46","date_gmt":"2023-03-21T10:37:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/?p=31922"},"modified":"2023-03-21T14:33:14","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T14:33:14","slug":"little-ireland-the-tell-tale-signs-of-cardiffs-forgotten-irish-community-in-newtown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/cjsnews\/little-ireland-the-tell-tale-signs-of-cardiffs-forgotten-irish-community-in-newtown\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Little Ireland&#8217;: The tell-tale signs of Cardiff&#8217;s forgotten Irish community in &#8216;Newtown&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>They came from Cork and Waterford after 1845 to make their homes in Cardiff<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more than 100 years, a handful of streets in the Welsh capital thronged with a close-knit Irish community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newtown was a residential area of the city, not too far from where Cardiff Central train station stands today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It consisted of 200 houses and six streets: North Williams Street, Pendoylan Street, Pendoylan Place, Roland Street, Rosemary Street and Ellen Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you haven\u2019t heard of Newtown, that\u2019s because it was demolished in the 1970s to make way for office buildings. The flagstones surrounding it are carved with the surnames of the families whose lives used to revolve around these streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the Great Famine of Ireland in 1845, hundreds of Irish families travelled to Cardiff by boat \u2013 from Cork and Waterford in particular. The Vulcan pub &#8211; originally on Whitmore Lane &#8211; closed in 2012, and was scheduled for demolition until it was saved by the National History Museum. Roland Street, Pendoylan Place, and North Williams Street are visible. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Irish arrivals would have been welcomed into Cardiff&#8217;s religious communities. In particular, the Catholic community thrived, with regular parades in the city. A towering statue of St Patrick himself once could be seen in Splott, not far from Newtown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff&#8217;s Irish connections are far from being stuck in the past.
