communications hub units&#8221; in Central Square, Wood Street, 1-4 Greyfriars Road, Ty Admiral David Street and Adam Street. <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\t\t\n\t\t<div digital billboard on the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes a range of services such as: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Free Wi-Fi and phone calls (including &#8220;rapid connection to emergency services&#8221;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Defibrillators<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wayfinding <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Device charging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And would capture environmental data, CCTV and air quality \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But Adblock Cardiff, who protest against advertising in public spaces, disagrees, arguing that public authorities should not be encouraging &#8220;the proliferation of climate-damaging screens&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They claimed the harms of advertising in public spaces outweigh the benefits, citing footfall congestion, road accidents and environmental issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>These billboards use an enormous amount of electricity in the middle of the climate emergency. Each of these units uses about the same amount of electricity as four domestic households.<\/p>\n<cite>Ed Bridges, Adblock Cardiff<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Adblock Cardiff commended the public services provided, but argued the board&#8217;s advertising side went against Cardiff Council&#8217;s policies regarding climate change and &#8220;creating a child-friendly city&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>There&#8217;s absolutely benefits to having defibrillators and Wi-Fi hotspots&#8230; but <strong>don&#8217;t<\/strong> use those elements as the Trojan Horse to sneak in extra, unnecessary, climate-damaging, public advertising.<\/p>\n<cite>Ed Bridges, Adblock Cardiff<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Cardiff Council said the applications &#8220;are not for or submitted by the council&#8221; and that they &#8220;are extremely limited in our powers to control&#8221; applications made <em>to<\/em> them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They agreed with AdBlock Cardiff&#8217;s findings and &#8220;will make every effort to ensure that distractions are kept to a minimum, pedestrian walkways are as clutter-free as much possible and where we have control to influence, electricity consumption is via sustainable means&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adblock&#8217;s branches in London&#8217;s Lambeth and Hackney have also previously successfully campaigned to have similar council proposals rejected.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Adblock Cardiff is lodging a city-wide campaign against the council&#8217;s proposals, saying the digital advertising boards will distract motorists, clutter pedestrian walkways and damage the climate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1116,"featured_media":32424,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_exactmetrics_skip_tracking":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_active":false,"_exactmetrics_sitenote_note":"","_exactmetrics_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[35,6,36],"tags":[21,513,14,38],"coauthors":[1148],"class_list":["post-32238","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest","category-news","category-politics","tag-cardiff","tag-cardiff-city-centre","tag-cardiff-city-council","tag-cardiff-council"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
