{"id":908,"date":"2025-03-11T10:59:43","date_gmt":"2025-03-11T10:59:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/ditch\/?p=908"},"modified":"2025-09-30T16:24:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-30T15:24:49","slug":"ditching-the-echo-chambers-a-dive-into-the-far-right-and-left-of-tiktok","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/ditch\/ditching-the-echo-chambers-a-dive-into-the-far-right-and-left-of-tiktok\/","title":{"rendered":"Ditching the echo chambers: a dive into the far right and left of TikTok"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">We went beyond our familiar algorithms to understand the uncomfortable truths about echo chambers, and how to break out of them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Brexit revealed a series of fault lines in British society nine years ago:&nbsp;48.1% voted to remain, and 52.9% to leave. Remainers were shocked. So much so they launched a campaign for a second referendum which ran until the eve of the UK\u2019s official exit from the EU.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/ditch\/the-ditchionary-your-guide-to-confusing-terms-both-online-and-offline\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/ditch\/the-ditchionary-your-guide-to-confusing-terms-both-online-and-offline\/\">\u00a0Echo chambers,<\/a> environments where people only come across opinions that align with their own, played a huge part in this, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lse.ac.uk\/brexit\/2018\/06\/19\/the-brexit-battle-on-facebook-assessing-echo-chambers-and-polarisation\/\">study<\/a> from the London School of Economics.\u00a0<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor of comparative politics at the University of Reading, Katharina Lawall explained our news diets have always been partisan to our political allegiance, creating these echo chambers. But her co-authored <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/american-political-science-review\/article\/polarizing-effect-of-partisan-echo-chambers\/5044B63A13A458A97CA747E9DCA07228?utm_campaign=shareaholic&amp;utm_medium=copy_link&amp;utm_source=bookmark\">study<\/a> found algorithms exacerbated echo chambers, since extreme content receives the greatest engagement. In turn, online echo chambers created a more divided and polarised democracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile is-vertically-aligned-center\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-uk\/85-percent-say-britain-is-divided-as-concern-about-extremism-rises#:~:text=New%20polling%20by%20Ipsos%2C%20taken,society%20is%20divided%20these%20days.\">Polling data<\/a> from the regulatory body regulatory body IPSO found that 85% of Britain think the country is divided according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-uk\/85-percent-say-britain-is-divided-as-concern-about-extremism-rises#:~:text=New%20polling%20by%20Ipsos%2C%20taken,society%20is%20divided%20these%20days.\">polling<\/a>. And Reform, a once fringe Brexit party, is climbing in opinion polls. The latest UK gov <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.co.uk\/politics\/articles\/51511-voting-intention-lab-24-ref-25-con-21-2-3-feb-2025\">figures<\/a> show Reform UK held 25% of the vote, their joint-highest score to date, up from 23% in the previous poll on 26-27 January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the dawn of Tr*mp, the rise of tech oligarchs, and a continuous wave of populist&nbsp; nationalism running through Europe, now is not the time to sit pretty and enjoy your Brat edits of Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"1024\" mind, <em>DITCH<\/em> sent two reporters into two opposing echo chambers: one on the far left, and one on the far right of find out how harsh these boxes are and how these can encourage extreme views. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-97a9fb6af85a4aa8b9cbea03341a8788\" style=\"color:#e9ff00\"><strong>How it works<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4b8d56a8abd8a1be06d0ad9370327417\" style=\"color:#e9ff00\">We both created TikTok accounts and followed the relevant left and right wing people.&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fbc095e24808f75716db025d15b8d143\" style=\"color:#e9ff00\">Right wing account: El*n M*sk, The Reform Party, Fox News, Nigel Farage, Ben Shapiro, D*nald Tr*mp.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7df0ac71f36352240103ff3607782019\" style=\"color:#e9ff00\">Left wing account: AOC, Bernie Sanders, Maxwell Frost, Jeremy Corbyn, Caroline Lucas, LabourUK, Labour Party, The Democrats, The Communists&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5fb24179b75c70de6302199b424c69dd\" style=\"color:#e9ff00\">We then followed our noses, interacting and liking the content that would be favoured by our chosen echo chambers.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 38%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>EVA who has interest in politics or anything that makes her laugh, ventures into the dark and disturbing world of the right wing- filled with fake and fragile egos<\/strong><\/h4>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" first videos I scrolled through were fairly innocuous. A series of memes, funny videos and general brain rot. This time there was a difference: I wouldn&#8217;t be retreating, I was settling in for the night.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the questionable memes, came dose of nostalgia for the past: a fondness for the Britain people once knew in their childhoods, a yearning to return to the simple life. Then, before I knew it, romanticised edits of imperial Britain appeared.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was a huge focus on the superiority of \u2018pure\u2019, white societies. Videos asked, \u201chave you ever noticed that the more \u2018diverse\u2019 the West becomes, the sh!ttier it gets in every way?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another said, \u201cEuropeans colonised the world and brought civilisation,\u201d and one warned, \u201ctransplant us anywhere and look what it will become.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was also a f*cking horrendous utopian style Lord of the Rings edit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-layout-flex wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-black-color has-text-color has-background has-link-color wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/vm.tiktok.com\/ZNdJkEReB\" style=\"background-color:#eeff00\">Watch the edit here<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rhetoric so far fitted into my preconceptions of the far-right thinking. What caught me by surprise though was the absolute obsession my algorithm had with Rhodesia.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhodesia was a British colony in Africa (1890\u20131965), which then became an unrecognized white minority-ruled state until 1979. In 1980 it won independence and became modern-day Zimbabwe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head of the southern poverty law center\u2019s intelligence project, Heidi Beirich,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/10\/magazine\/rhodesia-zimbabwe-white-supremacists.html\"> told<\/a> the New York Times the uptick of pro-Rhodesian messaging is a purposeful amplification of the ideology and practice of \u201cracist colonial regimes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She added, \u201cwhen you praise Rhodesia, in this context, what you\u2019re praising is violence to that end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The comments on these videos were also explicitly Islamophobic. \u201cF*ck Islam\u201d was often the top comment of these videos. Meanwhile, I noticed I was being targeted with ads for Muslim prayer cards. If the algorithms were pushing anti-muslim content towards me, then the influx of adverts targeted towards Muslims seemed explicitly provocative on the part of the algorithms. It\u2019s worth mentioning in my everyday social media use I\u2019d never been targeted by these kinds of ads before.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between the racist, imperialist and anti-muslim content came content which gave the sense that people on the right were fighting against societal oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivational videos promoted hustle culture, promising capitalist dreams of supercars, Dubai holidays and paper notes stacked high. These videos featured a steady stream of complaining about the state of the UK economy, and the difficulty in finding a well-paid job. The hyper-productive videos seemed to promote a feeling of hope and agency against the backdrop of our dragging economy. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>There was also an overwhelming feeling that being on the right causes you to be discriminated against in society. Reformers were complaining of being called a far-right thug just because they support Nigel Farage. At first, I wasn\u2019t entirely wrong. A lot of what I saw felt familiar \u2013 people speaking out against injustice, venting about the state of the world, calling for action. A political meme here and there. The main difference was volume, but that was to be expected \u2013 I had deliberately followed accounts that align with left-wing politics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I scrolled. I liked a couple videos. I followed more accounts. And then something shifted.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On my regular feed, I didn\u2019t see right-wing content at all \u2013 but I did see criticism of both the left and the right. I assumed it\u2019s because I didn\u2019t typically engage much with political content, so the algorithm didn\u2019t think I cared. And what did it do with that information? Memes. Thirst traps of Dean Withers. Edits of Kamala Harris with the caption, \u201cshe\u2019s so relatable.\u201d And, of course, conspiracy theories. I saw a three-minute video discussing whether M*sk tweeting 14 American flags in response to Tr*mp meant we should prepare for the end of the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The more I engaged with political content, the more my For You Page abandoned any semblance of nuance or critical thinking. And that\u2019s terrifying.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6551621759948a8861517343c18f3d38\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At face value, we are politically divided. And algorithms and echo chambers make this division a whole lot worse. From our research, these divided viewpoints are pitted against each other, antagonizing fears and removing important nuances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While this might all seem too overwhelming, there is light. Professor Lawall warns against fatalism towards echo chambers and political polarization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are things we can do to disrupt these more homogenous social networks,\u201d she explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her research showed that just a 20-minute conversation over Zoom with a stranger with an opposing viewpoint can positively change your opinion of them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even more positively: \u201cWe&#8217;re quite confident that maybe if you did something like this in real life, it would have, it should have even stronger effects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, if that\u2019s the case, next time you\u2019re confronted with an old codger with questionable opinions, take a seat next to him and have a chat.
