In her first season, Susie Wolff <a href=\"https:\/\/www.susiewolff.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">led Venturi Racing<\/a> to their first win at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.venturiracing.com\/news\/the-story-so-far-redemption-in-hong-kong\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2019 Hong Kong E-Prix<\/a>. Illustration credit: Shubhangi Dua<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There have been only <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediareferee.com\/f1-news-female-f1-drivers-formula-one\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">six women<\/a> who have raced in Formula One (F1), a sport that has held events for 72 years. On 18 May 1958 Maria Teresa de Filippis became <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adrianflux.co.uk\/influx\/people\/maria-teresa-de-filippis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the first woman<\/a> to participate in an F1 Grand Prix. Over the years, this male-dominated sport would go on to see five more women feature on the grid who would try their best to break the mould. But it wouldn\u2019t be until 2014 that a female driver would become a household name in Britain, leaving a mark on motorsport so large that her legacy has already been solidified. Wolff became the first woman to participate in an F1 weekend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ydMo_gPjyGs\">in 22 years<\/a>. Wolff\u2019s team Venturi was founded in 2013 but they won their first race only three years ago. She may have retired from F1 in 2015 but she has found a way of winning in her role as team principal.&nbsp; She is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/sport\/motor-racing\/susie-wolff-formula-e-female-team-boss-venturi-saudi-arabia-gender-diversity-formula-one-a8682006.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">only female team boss<\/a> across FE and F1 and is paving the way for more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Out of the box, box<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Oban, Scotland, Wolff began her karting career when she was only eight. Aged 13, she was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.venturiracing.com\/key-people\/susie-wolff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">named<\/a> British Woman Kart Racing Driver of the Year in 1996. The following years would see Wolff participate in a range of karting competitions where she would go on to be titled Driver of the Year four times. At the dawn of the new millennium, she was named Top Female Kart Driver in the World.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>I\u2019m not here to be the best female. I\u2019m here to be the best<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Wolff was promoted to single-seater racing in 2001. She participated in Formula Renault and then graduated to the British Formula 3 Championship in 2005. But Wolff\u2019s defining moment came when the Williams Formula One team named her as a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WilliamsRacing\/status\/295912437243338753?t=6HlZI-kk6yky5kEQFzdmNg&amp;s=19&amp;fbclid=IwAR3n7Btc_d3OrPJW-zW2a2dmwXxJAJFqhRKu-KQ4gjUK5OmtjLGzjSnzGyI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">development driver<\/a> in 2012. Wolff\u2019s first free practice session at the 2014 German Grand Prix, though riddled with engine problems, showed her potential as she finished two-tenths of a second behind veteran teammate Felipe Massa. The same season, Wolff was given an enhanced role at Williams as a test driver. In conversation with <a href=\"https:\/\/thegentlewoman.co.uk\/library\/susie-wolff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Gentlewoman<\/em><\/a> in 2015<em>, <\/em>Wolff said, \u201cI\u2019m not here to be the best female. In a blogpost for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/susie-wolff\/susie-wolff-retired_b_8461408.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Huffington Post<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>Wolff said, \u201cAt 13, the dream and the goal became Formula 1. I got oh so close. I wanted it and fought very hard to make it into that starting grid but the events at the start of this year and the current environment in F1 the way it is, it isn\u2019t going to happen.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current environment that Wolff was referring to was F1 being male-dominated, and Wolff is on the hunt to change that. The comments she received during her karting and racing days only made her more passionate. She once passed a male driver who chimed in on the team radio, \u201cGet this girl out of my way, get her out of my way!\u201d His engineer replied, \u201cWe can\u2019t get her out of your way, you have to overtake her.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Quick-Interview with Susie Wolff - Mercedes-Benz original\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4_J5i_3gwT4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Quick-Interview with Susie Wolff - Mercedes-Benz original\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4_J5i_3gwT4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016, she founded <a href=\"http:\/\/www.skysports.com\/f1\/news\/12433\/10129679\/susie-wolffs-dare-to-be-different-aims-for-more-females-in-motorsport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dare to be Different<\/a>, a non-profit organisation that aims to increase the participation of women in all forms of motor racing. The UK-based organisation hosts events throughout the country and invites schoolgirls aged eight to 14 to partake in racing related activities. She went one step further in 2019 by collaborating with the motorsport governing body F\u00e9d\u00e9ration Internationale de l&#8217;Automobile (FIA) on the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GirlsOnTrackUK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Girls on Track<\/a> initiative. \u201cIt\u2019s making sure that the sport as a whole is more diverse, because there <em>are<\/em> opportunities but our sport can be seen as inaccessible,\u201d Wolff told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autosport.com\/general\/news\/susie-wolffs-dare-to-be-different-in-new-project-with-fia-5283856\/5283856\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Autosport<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em>\u201cThe more women involved, the more will rise to the top.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In FE, Venturi is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=EQyb7TIJk1k&amp;t=6s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one-third female<\/a>. In F1, Mercedes ranks the highest with women making up 20% of their workforce, according to <em>ESPN. <\/em>Female participation needs to increase at every level of the sport. \u201cDo I think F1 is ready for a competitive female racing driver that can perform at the highest level? Yes. Do I think it is achievable as a woman? Most definitely,\u201d Wolff wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/susie-wolff\/susie-wolff-retired_b_8461408.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Huffington Post<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> \u201cDo I think it will happen soon? Sadly no. She may have hung up her helmet, but the gloves are off now. She dares to be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\" \/>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"has-vivid-red-color has-text-color wp-block-heading\">In other words&#8230;<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cSusie has proved herself to be a great role model. She has got here on merit and it will be fantastic to see what tomorrow brings for her, but also for the future of Formula One.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Claire Williams, former team principal of Williams F1, on Wolff\u2019s debut<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>The clich\u00e9 of making fun of the lady driver gets blown out of the water, because Susie holds her own absolutely and drives the car exceptionally well.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 David Coulthard, former F1 driver<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhen I saw Susie on the podium with the trophy in Berlin, I was more happy than if I had stood there.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Toto Wolff, team principal of Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 team, Susie\u2019s husband<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWhat makes Wolff a role model is not her on-track pace, but the very fact that she broke ground and ended the 22-year drought. She is seen as a driver and an ambassador for women in motorsport; a figure for young girls dreaming of being racing drivers and making it in a man\u2019s sport to look up to.\u201d<\/em> \u2013 Luke Smith, F1 writer at NBC Sports<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c<em>Her goal was not to be the best female driver in the world, but to be the best driver in the world.
