Screen Career For You: VR

Introducing the world’s first accessible virtual reality screen industry career exploration…

‘Screen Career for You’ is a brand-new virtual reality concept, where students from GCSE to University level can learn and explore a variety of different screen careers.

Having spoken to a group of students about the screen industry, gaining work experience is clearly a challenge. This challenge is ever more difficult for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, such as being geographically isolated or being discriminated against for their race, gender, or disability (Southgate et al. 2016). Additionally, industry research has demonstrated the underlying gap for these people (BFI 2020). This project is the perfect medium for facilitating these students, who will be fully immersed in industry scenarios to gain a deeper understanding, without the stress of finding real-life experience or fear of being judged or discriminated against.

The students will enter a virtual environment, where they will be met by an avatar who will take them on a journey through a variety of different 360° videos of screen careers. There will be a wide range of careers to explore, such as being a producer, director, runner, editor, camera operator, makeup artist, set designer, SFX artist, location scout and more! The students will also be able to interact with and learn more from specific members of crew within each career experience. Each student will leave the experience feeling inspired and confident about their career, whilst also gaining valuable knowledge about the industry.

The user will first be asked if they wish to continue in reduced sensory mode (this is for students with disabilties such as autism, so that they can continue in a more relaxed environment)
This is an Example of the user interacting with the cameraman…(again, this will be a real person)

The technology will be provided for students within their institution, as this way it will be free and accessible for all students, whilst also allows for the safeguarding of students. It will be so easy for students to use due to its straightforward, guided narrative, whilst also being highly interactive and entertaining.

Students, which screen career is for you? Let’s find out!

  1. I don’t quite get what this is for. Is it effectively an immersive careers fair presentation? These industries are all about practical hands-on experience. What makes this necessary and not just a ‘nice to have’ for the audience outlined.

  2. I like this idea and breaking down any barriers to entry is a big thumbs up in my book. I think this would have worked well in lockdown where access was a no-go. Would it give a realistic view of these types of jobs when their very nature is in-person and practical? I’m not so sure. That said, careers guidance is always needed and perhaps this is a good way in for some people who would otherwise struggle to get real-life access. I think Careers Wales and Creative Wales would be interested in a version of this.
