Does air pollution really kill people?
Air pollution causes an estimated 23,500 early deaths in the UK every year from NO2, rising to 40,000 when other pollutants are considered. To solve this problem, the UK government has already spent £370,000 of taxpayers’ money. However, the effect is limited. Then UN’s special rapporteur on pollution said the government failed to take its duty to protect the lives and health of British people.
According to Cardiff Council Air Quality Report 2016 done by Public Health Englan, air pollution is also connected with some diseases and is estimated to kill 143 people each year.
The opinions of public is unknown. So we asked the public about their opinion about air condition problems in the Cardiff and how they feel about what the government have done.
Ffion Thomas, 22, Student, Cardiff, UK
To me, air condition in Cardiff is not too bad, especially compared with big cities. And I think it will be a problem if the city keep developing more cars and roads. Government should make it clear where they spend money. We should cut down the use of cars and take public transport or cycling.
Andre Petrosillo, 21, Panasonic company worker, Cardiff, UK
It’s actually an important problem in Cardiff and Britain because people are suffering. And the UK government should invest right things which will stop the air pollution.
John Owen, 70, Retired, Pencoed, UK
In Cardiff, this is not a problem because it doesn’t bother me. The government are not looking at correct ways to solve the problem, they need to go back to the cause and think what the real causes? And it’s a long term problem.
Kanjana boonchoo, 27, Doctor, Tailand
Compared to my country, the air condition is really good here. The money can be spent in many ways, for example education, but it’s good. I think government should spend more money on large cities, like London. Because the high buildings, they trap everything inside.
Samar Hasan, 30, dentist, Bahrain
It’s quite good in Cardiff, compared with it in London where I feel like being gripped by the throat. Individuals should have cars ran by electricity. And improve public transportation, most people ought to go to work by public transportation than driving.
John Connor, 54, surveyor, Pontypridd, UK
Air pollution is a problem here. When I saw bus and lorry driving passed me, it’s terrible. I don’t think government spend enough, they should spend more.
Yijing Wu, 21, Student, Zhejiang, China
The air condition here is quite good, compared with China. The sky is blue. Maybe the government can reduce car emission by improving public transport and cycling.
Tim Hitch, 44, Engineer, Trowbridge, UK
Cardiff is not bad, compare with others in UK, like Southampton. But it’s important to catch it under control in Cardiff. It’s a long term thing, it shouldn’t be seen in a short term. So maybe government should keep current policies.
