It’s often said that a 20-minute walk in a park can clear your mind and help you forgive everything. Roath Park, with its classic Victorian style, has been a beloved destination in the city for over a century. On every nice day in Cardiff, this park invites people who are constrained by devices to unwind by its peaceful lake, surrounded by swans and the gentle rustling of leaves in the breeze.

Autumn brings different shapes to trees alongside the lake.

“I can switch off from my busy work life and enjoy a breath of fresh air,” shares Tom Baumann, a Cardiff University librarian who visits the park three times a week. When asked about whether it is a good idea to put the phone away, he chuckles, “I wish I could, but I just checked my messages right before this interview!”

The place also comforts James Lord, a student from Oxford now studying at Cardiff University. “It helps me find a balance between my inner world and the fast-paced life,” said he, who recently visited the park for the first time with his partner.

A lighthouse was constructed in 1915 in memory of  Captain Scott’s ill-fated voyage to the Antarctic from Cardiff in 1910.

Located just 25 minutes by bus from the city center, Roath Park is a much shorter journey than the time many of us spend scrolling through social media.

It features seven main sections, each designed for different activities. The most prominent is Roath Park Lake, complete with its iconic white lighthouse, a landmark of Cardiff. On sunny days, visitors can be seen chatting on benches, lounging on the lawns, or feeding the swans.

The lake has a population of about 100 Mute Swan and a number of geese.

Across from the lake lies the Botanic Garden, home to stunning trees, vibrant flowers, and a playground, making it a perfect spot for families and nature lovers. Roath Park offers multiple activities for outdoor enthusiasts, from hiking and fishing to simply lounging on the grass.

The laughter of families and children fills the air, which is much more genuine than the canned laughter of TikTok feeds. As you stroll through the park, you’ll encounter playful squirrels, running puppies, and swans enjoying their parties. These moments of joy can be more interesting than the latest celebrity gossip or work-related stress.

If you’re looking for a secret garden away from the chaos of modern life, Roath Park is a hidden oasis for modern “hermits.” Whether you want to connect with nature, enjoy quality time with loved ones, or simply take a moment for yourself, this park offers a comfortable seat for you to have a good rest.
