Castings occurred in Cardiff on Friday 21<sup>st<\/sup> November 2016. It\u2019s clear she enjoys working on it. \u201cI basically do more writing at the moment but also, the social media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hexer is \u201cBuffy-esque\/Community. It\u2019s got like mystery and action stuff and it\u2019s got LGBT themes.\u201d This is not just a show Alice and her team want to make but something they thought was needed.<\/p>\n<p>The web series is set in Cardiff because \u201cIt\u2019s cheaper and we live here, so it\u2019s a lot easier, although we are finding at the moment that it is a lot easier to find actors in London.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Why did Alice not choose to use Cardiff as a London setting for example though, \u00e0 la Doctor Who?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so frustrating. In Class, they just run past a load of Cardiff bins. D\u2019you think people in London are like \u201cThat\u2019s not London!\u201d or is London big enough that they\u2019re like \u201cThat could be a different part of London?\u201d\u201d She laughs throughout. That is Alice Evans: A joyful character, to whom ethics are key.<\/p>\n<p>Representation is very important to Alice and casting has proven a challenge. They have a character who is autistic, while also trying to ensure ethnically diverse casting. They are covering mental health issues including depression and anxiety too. She is adamant about different kinds of people from all walks of life being represented in Hexer. So much so, that she has accepted CVs from actors who can no longer afford to keep their \u00a3140 a year Spotlight CV page active (deemed a must for actors seeking success in the industry).<\/p>\n<p>Hexer really cares about paying as many people as possible, despite its challenges. \u201cWe\u2019ve contacted agencies and they\u2019ve said \u201cThis person will not work for less than \u00a3100 a day\u201d and we\u2019re like, we can\u2019t warrant, in a show about equality, paying some more than we can afford to pay others.\u201d This stresses what\u2019s at the forefront of this project: equality.<\/p>\n<p>Very important to this story is that Alice is not doing this alone or with any old team. Alice is doing this with her friends.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19195\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19195\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19195\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/12\/IMG_6672-625x417.jpg\" alt=\"Alice Evans: A joyful personality\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19195\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/12\/IMG_6672-625x417.jpg\" alt=\"Alice Evans: A joyful personality\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" \/><\/noscript> Alice Evans: A joyful personality<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The 24-year-old Cardiff Metropolitan University graduate, also on YouTube as IsJustForShiggles, found her team, through friendship. \u201cWell, it [Hexer] was a bit of an accident\u2026\u201d She laughs. \u201c\u2026\u2018cause I went to Uni to do English and Creative Writing and I did that and then I finished but in the meantime, I made friends with people who made YouTube videos and they just made stupid Doctor Who parody films but it was really fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team consists of friends Matthew Ekberg (Series creator and co-writer), Olivia Carass (Co-writer), Erin Stewart (Producer), Lina Langley (Assistant producer) and of course Alice Evans (Co-Writer). Matthew and Olivia also play Reuben Krail and Freddie Gibson, a character who identifies as gender fluid.<\/p>\n<p>There once was a time when the only hope of acquiring production funding was through writing to some wealthy businessmen or women, setting up meetings with them and hoping for the best. However, it did prove to be quite a challenge.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an experience, \u2018cause we weren\u2019t planning to do it, really but then our mate found this website that was doing a competition where you raise money but also you might get entered to win more money\u201d Hexer was fundraised for through Seed &amp; Spark\u2019s competition. Anything on the site which raised over \u00a38000 was automatically greenlit, so could go ahead but the crowdfunding process was a bit of a bumpy ride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ironic thing is we\u2019re trying to make a show for minority groups and because of the system we\u2019re in, minority groups don\u2019t have any money. So, there were people saying \u201cI don\u2019t have any money but I think this is really cool,\u201d\u201d In this instance, people share the link of the crowdfunding page through social media, so hopefully those who can donate come across it.<\/p>\n<p>Those people may sometimes be closer to home than expected. \u201cOur mate gave us \u00a3500 and we were like \u201cDid you mean to put five? Have you made a mistake \u2018cause I\u2019m gonna have to warn you, right now?\u201d and he was like \u201cNo, no. I think it\u2019s really cool and I wanna support you guys\u201d and we were like \u201cThank you!\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Successfully raising \u00a310000, there was no stopping Alice\u2019s vision. Hexer has benefited from crowdfunding\u2019s power to raise the fanbase or audience for a concept, before it is even fully formed or widely available. This, mainly thanks to social media.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-timeline\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HexerTheShow\" data-width=\"530\" data-height=\"625\">Tweets by HexerTheShow<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In a tough industry, it is important to recognise the different paths that can be taken to reach the goal of working in production. This, especially true in an age where the \u201ctraditional route\u201d is no longer the only expected way to do this.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19198\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19198\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19198\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/12\/IMG_6681-625x417.jpg\" alt=\"Alice having some fun\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19198\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19198\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2016\/12\/IMG_6681-625x417.jpg\" alt=\"Alice having some fun\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" \/><\/noscript> Alice having some fun, as she does working on Hexer, with her friends.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Alice recognised this and Hexer won\u2019t be on your TV screens, but online. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fullscreen.com\/\">FullScreen<\/a> will run a competition. If Hexer wins this, the pilot will be on their website, fully challenging the way film has worked for so long. It is important to her that it\u2019s available on this platform, so as many people the pilot is trying to speak to and represent, can see it as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s funny having people who know what it is now be like \u201cI\u2019m waiting\u201d but it\u2019s also terrifying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fans don\u2019t have long to wait, as Hexer begins filming in January. It\u2019s clear the Hexer team\u2019s efforts will permeate throughout the show, bringing a very much needed breath of fresh air to the internet.
