If you want the answer to that question should you go to a debate in the European Parliament\u00a0or a session in the European Court of Justice?<\/p>\n<p>According to Stephen Turkington, Language Officer for the European Commission, you&#8217;ll find the answer around the table at dinner parties hosted by\u00a0EU officials.<\/p>\n<p>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cTwo or three weeks ago I was in Brussels and with this in mind I was listening to people on the streets and colleagues in informal situations as well as formal,\u201d Stephen said. \u201cI found that English still played a major role in both the professional and private lives of many\u00a0EU officials.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Even though all the remaining member states would have to vote unanimously to remove English as an official language, Stephen said, he thought that English is entrenched as an official language in the EU institutions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22069\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1-246x300.jpg 246w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1-500x609.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22069\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"779\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1-246x300.jpg 246w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/FullSizeRender-1-500x609.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people presume that as soon as British completes the process to leave the EU, English would loss its status. \u2028\u2028I think people assume that because the UK goes English goes,\u201d Stephen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I would distinguish between English as the official language of the UK and English as the lingua franca. And also incidentally as the language of Ireland and Malta as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo while in some people\u2019s minds there might be a challenge the future of English does not face the risk that some people think it might,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>However, if one language were to take over, \u201cit would be French,\u201d Stephen said, adding: \u201cbecause the European Court of Justice is still very francophone.\u201d\u2028\u2028French was the dominant language in the EU institutions and it remained for two decades.<\/p>\n<p>But Stephen said\u00a0that he saw no signs of that returning to French as an official language, because many central and eastern European countries don\u2019t have that level of French. And similarly many Scandinavian countries have a high level of English but not the same level of French.<\/p>\n<p>There are 24 official languages in the EU, and English has dominated during the two decades. Now, English has displaced French in most education systems througout Europe and the younger generations use it freely. Most staff working in Brussels communicate in English rather than French or German, the other two working languages at the European institutions.<\/p>\n<p>Is it time for EU countries to give up English as an official language after referendum?
