So how do you bring about political change?<\/h2>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_22877\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22877\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22877\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_1029-1-625x370.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"370\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22877\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22877\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_1029-1-625x370.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"370\" \/><\/noscript> Discussing fossil fuel protest in the former bingo hall at Cathays Community Centre<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n\u201cWe want to pressure the country\u2019s top 200 public institutions into cutting ties with the fossil fuel industry.\u201d That is\u00a0Dan Goss, part of Fossil Free UK, summarises the aims of the movement.\u00a0The aim is to dry up the flow of money that petrol companies gets from public institutions.\u00a0<b>On June 9<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/FossilFreeCardiff\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the campaign will come to the Welsh Capital<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> to target Cardiff University.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Fossil Free, the university currently invests \u00a32.7 million of its endowments funds in fossil fuel companies. The objective is to pressure them to divest these funds and shift to lower-risk investments in the next few years. Just across the Severn Channel, Bristol University has agreed to comply with the requests earlier this month.<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/global-city\/cardiff-to-become-the-uks-best-recycling-city\"><em>Cardiff&#8217;s new energy plant transforms food waste into power<\/em><\/a><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">There\u2019s still two months before the march, and in the meantime, Fossil Free UK is organizing training sessions across the country is to encourage anyone with an interest to brainstorm ideas on how to campaign in their own community. Their latest stop was here in Cardiff, last Sunday.<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22873\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22873\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-22873 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_1034-625x417.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22873\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22873 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_1034-625x417.jpg\" width=\"625\" height=\"417\" \/><\/noscript> Participants in the training came up with their own ideas on how to spread the message and engage the public<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22916\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22916\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22916\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_20170319_161635-625x833.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22916\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22916\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_20170319_161635-625x833.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"833\" \/><\/noscript> Some of the proposals that came up during training<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere are obvious things you can do on a daily basis,\u201d says Dan. \u201cThings like recycling, changing the means of transport you use, talk the people in your life into it. [But] there\u2019s a limit to how much you can do on your own, and the best way to inform society is to organize on a collective basis.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Of course, the effort takes time. Sometimes it can be disappointing seeing how unconcerned the majority of people are, and how unresponsive institutions can be. But there are ways to fight this sense of disengagement and disinterest, says Dan. <\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOne is to look at the historical successes of campaigning to put pressure on state power and corporations. Secondly, it turns out you can actually win things, and a lot of people don\u2019t realize that. But as soon as you do it\u2019s a kind of watershed moment. You go: \u2018Oh, we\u2019ve actually just collectivized our agency \u2013 we can actually have control over the institutions that control our lives.\u201d And the moment you start realising that is when you make headway in a particular political campaign.\u201d<\/span><br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22880\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22880\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22880\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_1032-625x416.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"416\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22880\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-22880\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/03\/IMG_1032-625x416.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"416\" \/><\/noscript> Looking at past successes is a good way to feel empowered and carry on, says Dan<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nThe atmosphere during group discussion is one of militancy \u2013 some of the people present have been involved with the movement for quite some time \u2013 but not in a political sense. Politics actually turns up surprisingly little in conversations.<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">On being asked if one can be apolitical and still feel a part of the movement, Dan said: \u201cI think there is no such a thing as apolitical. Everyone has a tendency towards politics. Even if they\u2019re neutral, that usually just means they agree with the power structure.
