The East Sussex Council said that missed days impact entire classes, distracting teachers as they help sick students catch up.<br \/>\nMany parents were upset by this campaign, feeling that it is an unrealistic expectation. <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0029640\">Research suggests that sending students to school when sick<\/a> can have a negative impact both on them and their classmates. Children take longer to recover from their illness without rest, while also spreading the infection to others, leading to lower academic performance overall. We went out onto the streets of Cardiff to find out the public\u2019s opinion.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Pete, 54, Birmingham<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24979 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/PeteSickLeave-625x352.png\" alt=\"Pete Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24979 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/PeteSickLeave-625x352.png\" alt=\"Pete Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cI think it has to be on a case by case basis when you\u2019re ill, but on the other hand, you need to discourage kids taking days off too readily. I think it\u2019s hard to put a limit on it, because what happens if there\u2019s a serious accident? I don\u2019t think you can put a quota on it. It\u2019s hard to regulate.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Jiaryi, 23, China<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24893 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/JiaryiSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Jiaryi Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24893 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/JiaryiSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Jiaryi Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cI think children should definitely be able to choose. It\u2019s their freedom to choose. It\u2019s good to be educated, but it depends. I think they should discuss it with their family. It\u2019s not sensible to say if it\u2019s fair or not fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Rebecca Miles, 25, Cardiff<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24917 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/RebeccaMilesSickLeave-625x352.png\" alt=\"Rebecca Miles Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24917 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/RebeccaMilesSickLeave-625x352.png\" alt=\"Rebecca Miles Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s down to the parents to decide what\u2019s best for their children, I wouldn\u2019t pretend to know about parenting. I\u2019d go with what the parents say, and it depends on the gravity of the situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Terry Williams, 60, Dorset<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24949 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/TerryWilliamsSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Terry Williams Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24949 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/TerryWilliamsSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Terry Williams Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s cheaper for the kids to go away, but I don\u2019t agree with it, unless you\u2019re on your deathbed or in the hospital. It\u2019s a waste of time to have doctors giving out sick notes. I agree with the rules. I\u2019ve never done it, and I know lots of parents may have done it because it\u2019s cheaper, but that\u2019s life, isn\u2019t it? No, I\u2019m joking. I missed quite a lot of school in secondary school because of a chest infection, and my parents got a letter basically saying your child has missed far too much school, even though it wasn\u2019t my fault. I wasn\u2019t just sitting there saying, \u2018I don\u2019t want to go to school so I\u2019m gonna be ill\u2019, it was because I couldn\u2019t go to school.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Rebecca, 21, Australia<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24933 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/RebeccaSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Rebecca Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-24933 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/RebeccaSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Rebecca Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><br \/>\n\u201cNo. I work at a school in Australia, and if the kids come in sick, then other kids get sick. She\u2019s 15 now, and she\u2019s been out of school since year eight. Now she\u2019s doing her GCSEs. I think it\u2019s good for them to go to school, because it\u2019s part of their education, but then it\u2019s nuts. You get a knock on the door from social services. I\u2019ve been there before. Do I think it\u2019s reasonable? It\u2019s subjective. Whether they\u2019re actually ill or the parents think \u2018oh, they\u2019ve got a little cough\u2019. Three days doesn\u2019t seem like much. I think it\u2019s worse if they go to school and all the other kids get ill as well. And what if the teacher gets ill? That\u2019ll disrupt it even more.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Ben Chapel, 25, Redding<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25086 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/BenSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Ben Chapel Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25086 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/BenSickLeave-625x351.png\" alt=\"Ben Chapel Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cIf you get ill and you only have three days, it\u2019s ridiculous! I\u2019ve got two younger sisters, and they get charged if they take one day off to go on a holiday, yet they can get random days off whenever they like in the business sector. I think it\u2019s stupid, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Morgan, 18, Lester<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25118 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/MorganSick-625x352.png\" alt=\"Morgan Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-25118 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2017\/11\/MorganSick-625x352.png\" alt=\"Morgan Sick Days\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s stupid, isn\u2019t it? With primary students, I never found the amount of school you missed from sick days to be massively significant. Making kids to go to school when they\u2019re unwell actually makes them less productive. It\u2019s more disturbing to the class because they have to listen to a kid coughing and spluttering. It\u2019s a disturbance.
