{"id":29251,"date":"2018-02-15T15:19:55","date_gmt":"2018-02-15T15:19:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/intercardiff\/?p=29251"},"modified":"2018-02-15T15:19:55","modified_gmt":"2018-02-15T15:19:55","slug":"lung-scans-can-help-smokers-quit-according-new-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/science-environment\/lung-scans-can-help-smokers-quit-according-new-study","title":{"rendered":"Lung Scans Can Help Smokers Quit, According to New Study"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Quitting smoking is tough, but X-Ray scans for cancer can help.<\/span><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29334\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29334\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29334 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/CigaretteButtBig-625x352.png\" alt=\"Cigarette butts in an ashtray\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29334\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29334 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/CigaretteButtBig-625x352.png\" alt=\"Cigarette butts in an ashtray\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Tobacco smoking&#8217;s dangerous effects on health are well known, but its addictive nature makes the habit hard to kick.\u00a0\u00a9<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/chocolateforest\/\">S\u00f8ren Gammelmark<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Smokers can be encouraged to quit by receiving X-Ray scans of their lungs, even if no tumours are found, recent research from Cardiff University has shown. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Specialised X-Rays called CT scans can detect lung cancer early, but also gives smokers a chance to learn about tobacco risks, helping them to quit. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr Katherine Brain, head of study and reader at Cardiff University&#8217;s school of medicine said, \u201cSmokers who had CT scans were about twice as likely to quit smoking as those in the control group.&#8221; Control groups are a portion of medical subjects who are not given a treatment. They are compared to subjects who are given treatment, in order to determine what the benefits and side effects are.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThis may be because engaging with CT lung scans can give smokers an opportunity to access smoking cessation support, at a time when they are likely to be receptive to help,&#8221; said Brain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29337\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29337\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29337 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/CT-Scan-625x352.png\" alt=\"Man taking a CT scan. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29337\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29337 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/CT-Scan-625x352.png\" alt=\"Man taking a CT scan. \" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> CT or &#8216;Computed Topography&#8217; scans use low-dosage radiation to take many thin pictures of the human body, creating a whole picture.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a9<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/tyfn\/\">Phillip Jeffrey<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It may not just be the scans themselves which are helpful, but the \u201cteaching moment\u201d that discussing them provides.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Accessing such scans and other support can be difficult, however. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cAt the moment there is no routine CT lung scanning service available in the UK for people who would be eligible because of their age and smoking history.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cRolling out a lung health check NHS service needs investment and a high level of coordination, as well as evaluation of reach and impact,\u201d Dr Brain said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Even if CT scans were made freely available, some smokers may not take them. Dr Brain said, \u201cAs well as overcoming practical barriers to setting up services, there are psychological barriers such as fear, fatalism and stigma about lung cancer and smoking that can discourage people from attending health checks.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29331 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/000-1-625x655.png\" alt=\"Infographic about the cost of smoking in the UK. \" width=\"625\" height=\"655\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29331 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/000-1-625x655.png\" alt=\"Infographic about the cost of smoking in the UK. \" width=\"625\" height=\"655\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asking some smokers how they would\u00a0react if offered a free CT scan, 63% said they\u2019d take it. One person asked, \u201cWhy not? It\u2019s always work a checkup.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI would accept, on the basis of curiosity,\u201d said Katherine Shaw, a university student, who used to smoke up to 30 cigarettes a day, but now only smokes socially. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI think it would ultimately change my behaviour.
