Nestled in Cathays is Hogwurst, an independent caf\u00e9 situated on North Road. Whether you&#8217;re looking for a cheeky snack or a hearty meal, this caf\u00e9 will have something to satisfy your appetite.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29310\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29310\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29310 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/1-Hogwurst-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29310\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29310 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/1-Hogwurst-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Affectionately known as \u201cHoggies,\u201d the cafe is located on North Road, opposite the Blackweir Tavern pub.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hoggies was opened in 2014 by Hoa Dieu, out of his passion for food. The leading concept was to introduce an affordable gourmet hot dog to Cardiff for students to enjoy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe problem with hot dogs is that they had a bad reputation as the poor cousin to the burger, often served from jars and made from gristle and poor quality meat,\u201d says Dieu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur meat content is 100% real meat. Our suppliers are true masters in their craft.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29320\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29320\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29320\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/2-Bar-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29320\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29320\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/2-Bar-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Customers go to the bar to order their food.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Board games sit in a pile near the window, on standby for a rainy day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe whole concept from the food to the individualistic decor is intended for an informal and casual experience,\u201d says Dieu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNobbly chairs and kooky tables are what we are about. No table cloths and no snooty waiters, because we like to encourage interaction,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p>Hogwurst has become something of a de facto study centre. With fast WiFi connectivity and soft rock tunes playing in the background, Dieu\u2019s only regret is that he wishes the premises were bigger.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29327\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29327\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29327\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/tea-glorious-tea-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29327\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29327\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/tea-glorious-tea-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Ornaments decorate the walls, giving the surroundings a homely feel.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Billy is a chef and has been working at Hogwurst for a year and a half. He likes the close-knit working environment: \u201cIf this was in London, it would be full. There are only four of us working here full time; it\u2019s a very relaxed place to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Food options range from breakfast baps to Nachos.<\/p>\n<p>Opting for the chicken mayo hot dog, the meal was served within 20 minutes. Portions were generous and the presentation was superb. The hot dog, salad and evenly-cut fries were placed delicately on a small tray.<\/p>\n<p>The sweetness of the brioche bun complemented the chicken which was warm and flavoursome.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29317\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29317\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29317 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Featured-image-on-the-page-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29317\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29317 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Featured-image-on-the-page-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Chicken mayo hot dog, salted fries and salad.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe story of the bun is that it has to be pillow soft and fresh. In came Allen\u2019s Bakery, which has been there for over 130 years. They produce our brioche often baked at 6am and delivered to us by 10am ready for hotdogging. The two were meant to be together,\u201d says Dieu.<\/p>\n<p>Milkshakes cost \u00a33.50 and the choices are aplenty. Served in bottles with colourful straws, the shakes have a smooth consistency and sweet taste.<\/p>\n<p>Prices are in the mid-range with most meals costing \u00a38.50. This includes a hot dog, pickle and a choice of salted fries or salad.<\/p>\n<p>Making a positive difference in the community is at the heart of the business as Hoggies donates \u00a31 to the charity \u201cAction Against Hunger\u201d for every customer that orders the Frank and Bun hot dog.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29352\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29352\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29352\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/9-Hoodie-thing-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29352\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/9-Hoodie-thing-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Light-hearted wordplay enhances the informal tone of the business.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAction Against Hunger was a great way for us to help through the medium of food,\u201d says Dieu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of our customers are international students and this reminds us of the wider world. We are fortunate here to have a plethora of food options. Some aren\u2019t so lucky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our way of recognising and appreciating what we have. Thanks to the generosity of our customers, we have raised hundreds of pounds so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is a conscious effort to use recycled materials wherever possible. From the napkins to the tins used to serve fries, the caf\u00e9 tries to operate in an environmentally friendly fashion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29359\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29359\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29359 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/6-Tissues-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29359\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29359 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/6-Tissues-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Sustainability is a key part of Hoggie\u2019s image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Running Hogwurst has not come without its challenges.<\/p>\n<p>According to Billy, a difficulty for Hoggies has been visibility: \u201cThe Deliveroo guy\u2019s been lost for half an hour before. People don\u2019t really notice us. This is what busy looks like,\u201d he says, panning around to look at 12 customers sitting at the tables across from the bar.<\/p>\n<p>Dieu mentions the caf\u00e9\u2019s conflict with local estate agent, CPS homes: \u201cOver the last couple of years, CPS have hired a coffee van handing out free coffee in exchange for students details.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been an ongoing issue with them; it\u2019s been going on for a few years now.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29372\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29372\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29372 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/hoggie-campaign-625x432.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29372 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/hoggie-campaign-625x432.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"432\" \/><\/noscript> Hoggies launched a campaign for students to Boycott the CPS coffee van.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe van is positioned directly across the road in the pub car park. Inevitably it has had a big impact on our caf\u00e9. We are a small community based cafe and question why CPS would want to jeopardise our existence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Billy adds: \u201cWe\u2019ve seen students start to open the doors and then they turn away when they see the free coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just gotten to the end of our tether with it. They have no concern for the impact it has on a business which not only serves the student population but employs them too,\u201d says Dieu.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29377\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29377\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29377 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/8-Boycott-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29377\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29377 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/8-Boycott-625x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"433\" \/><\/noscript> Dieu: We employ students. We equip and train them in everything we do.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe believe in consumer choice and the bettering of product&#8230;but their sole intention is to gather student details for direct marketing and as collateral, they have no concern for the impact it has on a business that serves and employs the student population,\u201d says Dieu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t mind competition but what we call into question are the ethical and moral standards of CPS in deciding to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CPS were said to have been unsympathetic when confronted, and they have continued to periodically rent the coffee van.<\/p>\n<p>Despite all of this, Hoggies continues to faithfully serve the student population by offering a discount of 10% off food orders.<\/p>\n<figure
