{"id":29739,"date":"2018-02-22T15:30:36","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T15:30:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/intercardiff\/?p=29739"},"modified":"2018-02-22T15:30:36","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T15:30:36","slug":"orangutans-struggle-survive-poaching-borneo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/science-environment\/orangutans-struggle-survive-poaching-borneo","title":{"rendered":"Orangutans Struggle to Survive Poaching in Borneo"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Nearly 150,000 \u00a0Bornean orangutans have been lost to deforestation and poaching in less than 20 years.<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29748\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29748\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29748\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/male-orangutan-facejpeg-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Male flanged Orangutan\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29748\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29748\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/male-orangutan-facejpeg-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Male flanged Orangutan\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Native to Borneo, the Bornean orangutan is listed as critically endangered on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iucnredlist.org\/details\/17975\/0\">IUCN Red List.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bornean orangutan populations have decreased by nearly half as a result of unsustainable resource demand and conflict with humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cell.com\/current-biology\/fulltext\/S0960-9822(18)30086-1\">A recent study<\/a> working with researchers from Cardiff University has found that populations of the critically endangered Bornean orangutan (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Pongo pygmaeus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) fell by nearly 150,000 between 1999 and 2015. Researchers are shocked by the figures, which prove that many past predictions were wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Benoit Goossens, a reader of biosciences at Cardiff University took part in the research. He says,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u201cThe findings are staggering and it was hard for me to believe them. The rate of decline is much faster than what we thought, and this is worrying. If we cannot stop this decline, many more populations are going to disappear in the next few decades.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29751\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29751\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Deforestation-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Deforestation\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-29751\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/Deforestation-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"Deforestation\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Deforestation across Borneo is just one threat to these great apes. <a href=\"https:\/\/creativecommons.org\/licenses\/by-nc\/2.0\/\">\u00a9<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/rainforestactionnetwork\/5551935164\/in\/photolist-9sB7U5-7oR539-aUzu68-aUzjdP-nhxtVb-aNLKuX-aUztNK-8ZuDU7-bXYQqS-bGwnZc-bGwjrV-bGwgCV-bGwpEK-bXYPUo-aUzgaT-bGwpXg-aUzwYT-aUzsSa-aUzoPV-aUzu36-aUzigK-aUzgv8-8ZrBf4-aUzose-aUzwi4-aUzuqt-aUzxA8-9sB7ch-aUziMX-aUzpbn-btBAgo-bGwoCp-aUzwzr-btByYh-btBA7G-aUzhtg-ckn6Hb-btBzAL-aUzgma-5EczRr-aUzvui-ckn7DW-btBzT9-aUzh52-9sy7jz-9sB7Kw-7eDBk-ckn4cm-aUzuYg-aUzxeg\">Rainforest Action Network<\/a>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While agricultural deforestation and logging were issues highlighted in the research, the hunting of these great apes for food and illegal wildlife trade have also been identified as significant factors in their decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe major reason explaining this decline is the killing that happens in non-protected and protected areas. Forest conversion for agriculture explains less than 50% of the decline,\u201d says Dr. Goossens.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If the impact of resource demand and hunting on these animals is not reduced, a further 43,500 could be lost in the next 35 years due to habitat loss alone. Measures have been taken here to ensure the forests vital to orangutan survival are protected. He insists there is hope for the future of orangutans but stresses that more needs to be done to prevent poaching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cHere in Sabah, the efforts of the government to protect 30% of the forest need to be applauded: this will be a game saver for the largest populations. We also need to ensure that no orangutan is killed and ensure that if this happens, the poachers are brought to justice,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Goossens<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2017\/nov\/02\/new-species-of-orangutan-discovered-in-northern-sumatra-tapanuli-pongo-tapanuliensis\">New species of orangutan threatened.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2018\/feb\/07\/borneo-orangutan-found-riddled-with-gunshots-in-latest-attack\">Bornean orangutan shot 130 times.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/in-pictures-43083872\">Orangutan conservation in Sumatra.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a result of this poaching, many of the remaining populations of Bornean orangutans now have less than 100 individuals. This is below the threshold needed to ensure these populations survive, termed a \u2018viable population\u2019. Successful breeding is unlikely to occur in these groups, meaning these smaller populations may soon be lost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe larger orangutan populations seem to be secure in Sabah, [but] there is still a real risk that smaller groups of animals that are unaccounted for today may disappear in the next few years.
