{"id":29827,"date":"2018-02-22T14:30:56","date_gmt":"2018-02-22T14:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.jomec.co.uk\/intercardiff\/?p=29827"},"modified":"2018-02-22T14:30:56","modified_gmt":"2018-02-22T14:30:56","slug":"cardiff-spoken-word-night","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/global-city\/cardiff-spoken-word-night","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff venue hosts spoken word event to promote diverse voices of local artists"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Multicultural artists have created a platform to express themselves through spoken word in Grangetown, Cardiff.<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30015\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30015\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30015 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/4-Black-woman-1-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30015\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30015 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/4-Black-woman-1-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><\/noscript> <strong>Different voices: The event is held monthly at Tramshed, an arts venue in Grangetown. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Local artists are making space to uplift the voices of people who feel marginalised by mainstream Welsh culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhere I\u2019m coming from\u201d is a\u00a0series of spoken word sessions where artists perform original poetry in front of a live audience.<\/p>\n<p>Durre Shahwar and Hanan Issa created the event in August 2017 to promote the voices of people from Black Asian Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was a regular at many spoken word events in Cardiff and I felt that diversity in the arts was really lacking, particularly in Wales. We wanted writers of BAME backgrounds to share words and create a safe space where they feel comfortable performing their writing,\u201d says Shahwar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29866\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29866\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29866 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/feat-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29866\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29866 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/feat-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><\/noscript> <strong>Shahwar: Diversity is lacking in Cardiff\u2019s spoken word scene.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although the event is predominantly targeted at the BAME community, people from all walks of life are encouraged to speak freely about their thoughts in an open-minded environment.<\/p>\n<p>This session featured Gordon Anderson, a spoken word artist and librarian who has been writing poetry for five years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerally the spoken word scene is brilliant but it\u2019s a very white space&#8230;. \u2018Where I\u2019m coming from\u2019 has gotten people to speak about experiences that we would otherwise not hear. There are writers from black and ethnic minority communities who are not necessarily going to feel comfortable going into what they perceive to be very white spaces,\u201d says Anderson.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29883\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29883 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/gordon-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29883 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/gordon-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><\/noscript> <strong>Pictured: Gordon Anderson performing onstage.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shahwar is conscious of the message that this sends to people: \u201cRepresentation of people and their different experiences is important. When we don\u2019t make the effort, we basically say that [this medium of expression] isn\u2019t for you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Selena Caemawr is a spoken word artist from Coventry: \u201cI came to Cardiff to study, but I\u2019ve stayed for the love of it. My affection for Wales has grown over the nearly thirteen years I\u2019ve lived here, and I am environed by a vibrant, diverse community of friends.<\/p>\n<p>Caemawr feels that &#8220;Where I&#8217;m coming from&#8221; is inclusive and is a place where she can recount her life experiences as an autistic woman of colour.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSpoken word is a medium in which my autism is not a barrier; it allows me to express myself in my own non-linear, idiosyncratic way. In fact, having autism is an inspiration and in some ways an advantage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is more approachable, less academic and intimidating than traditional poetry. That\u2019s important to me because I want my words to be accessible to a diverse audience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Echoing Caemawr&#8217;s sentiments, Shahwar says: \u201cIt\u2019s the art form that bridges the gap between traditional literature and the community&#8230; whether you enjoy literature or not, spoken word bridges that gap. It\u2019s really dynamic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The audience is receptive to the different perspectives offered by the artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe live in a world now that\u2019s becoming increasingly intolerant to different stories. I\u2019m really learning that our stories matter. There\u2019s no one way to be working class,\u201d says Shahwar.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_29888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-29888\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-29888 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/audience-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-29888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-29888 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/02\/audience-625x500.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"500\" \/><\/noscript> <strong>The atmosphere is non-judgmental and relaxed, with attendees open to hearing different perspectives on various issues.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Shahwar\u2019s writing is influenced by a range of themes including current affairs, questions of identity and belonging.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like [these topics] dominate our political and social landscape, so I like to add my voice and experiences to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Caemawr&#8217;s spoken word pieces are influenced by a number of sources.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of my work has been inspired by my sensual exploration of objects in the natural world, such as seaweed on a beach\u2026but I have also been galvanised by experiences as politically and emotionally charged as responding to a racist micro aggression, or an ontological investigation of my own very non-traditional sexuality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA range of topics come up at these events.
