It\u2019s time to entertain your guests for 20 minutes, but what would keep them occupied? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then, the penny drops. There\u2019s a game of Connect 4 collecting dust in a cabinet next to the armchair. The dinner party has been saved from eternal doom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most people have seen a board game. Monopoly, Snakes and Ladders, Chess and Scrabble are just a few classics that have become household names. Monopoly alone has torn many a family apart.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Board games have afforded players a few minutes of fun or several hours of entertainment for centuries. So what does it take to switch gears and take up a position behind the scenes as a game designer?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adam Porter is a lecturer and dentist from Oxford who designs games as a hobby: \u201cI usually manage to find a day in the week where I\u2019m designing games. One day a week I\u2019ll sit down and spend that time designing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Porter has three games that have been released in countries like the US and Germany.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30417\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30417\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30417 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28511850_1817049848329071_1059909246_n-625x625.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"625\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30417\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30417 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28511850_1817049848329071_1059909246_n-625x625.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"625\" \/><\/noscript> Porter designed the game &#8220;Doodle Rush&#8221; which was released in 2017.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Porter became interested in game design after being fascinated with the mechanics multiplayer tabletop games: \u201cI played lots of games and wanted to get behind the curtain and behind the scenes and know how things are working. I always tend to go that way, I wanted to see how these games are made and see if I could do it too.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He is the co-ordinator of a group called \u201cPlaytest\u201d which is made up of game designers who meet weekly in Cardiff. Their gatherings involve testing original board games designed in their spare time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cPlay testing is a term within the board game industry. It\u2019s the most important bit of game design, it\u2019s test test test test your design&#8230; Playtest Cardiff is part of a wide network of groups that are play testing around the UK,\u201d says Porter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The UK Playtest network is internationally renowned for bringing talented game designers to the fore. Locations are shared on their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/GameDesignersMeetup\/\">Facebook g<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/GameDesignersMeetup\/\">roup.<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Some games require strategic thinking while others are won based on good fortune.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Robert Fisher, a game designer from Penarth says: \u201cThere\u2019s been a change in the types of games designers want to create. There is competitive play where players battle against each other to win a reward or fulfil an objective. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThen the newer style is called the co-operative game, where the players work together to achieve something. It could be killing a boss or saving a town. The challenge for designers is that sometimes there is a bossy person who wants to take control of the game&#8230;or there are quieter players who don\u2019t make any of the strategic decisions. Designers need to make sure\u00a0<\/span>there is a balance and that everyone starts on equal footing.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30423\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30423\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30423 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28512174_1817050034995719_1330785614_n-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30423\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30423 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28512174_1817050034995719_1330785614_n-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Bringing out the best and worst in people of all ages, playing board games can be a team-building experience or draw out fierce rivalries between competitors.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A time-consuming hobby, game design requires a combination of skills: \u201cYou have to be a\u00a0<\/span>problem solver, a creative person, imaginative,\u201d says Porter.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThere\u2019s two different approaches to designing games, you can try and design games based\u00a0<\/span>on creating the universe and the story first and then trying to make the rules of the game. Those are for the people who like building worlds. Then there\u2019s the gameplay method, where you make the rules first and then imagine what that story might be later on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Porter takes a scientific, mathematical, puzzle-based approach to game design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cEither way works and most often, \u00a0we\u2019re doing a combination of the two.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The challenges of game design span the process from devising a concept to the creation of rules and production of materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt can be anything. The initial challenges are coming up with ideas. I don\u2019t have a huge problem with that &#8211; ideas come to me fairly freely. That\u2019s not the same for everybody, lots of people struggle at that point, but I frequently find that an idea works in my head and then I put it on the table and it doesn\u2019t work at all&#8230;so then it\u2019s a case of testing it, testing it until trying to fix that problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30428\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30428\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30428 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28536840_1817063168327739_812969609_n-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30428 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28536840_1817063168327739_812969609_n-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Persistence is important in game design.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cBut sometimes you can\u2019t even tell what the problem is. All you know is that the game isn\u2019t fun, and that\u2019s the most challenging bit,\u201d says Porter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIt\u2019s a constant discovery process, I am very happy with the way it\u2019s gone, you\u2019re constantly learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Porter is influenced by other board games: \u201cI play a lot of board games and we\u2019re at a golden age where well over a thousand games will be released each year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI know which sort of games I want to play and which designers I want to follow and I\u2019ll play their games and I find them constantly inspiring.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWhen someone comes up with something totally new that I\u2019ve never seen before, that\u2019s what I look for with my own designs. That\u2019s where I get my inspiration.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30425\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30425\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30425 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28534779_1817048704995852_52245296_n-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30425\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30425 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/28534779_1817048704995852_52245296_n-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Porter (pictured) says that it does not cost a lot of money to design a board game.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Porter says that this hobby is inexpensive: \u201cOur group is happy to test games that are just on scraps of paper with pencil, biro and some very basic components.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cOnce you get to the point where you\u2019re trying to produce something really polished that you can send to publishers&#8230; then it gets a little bit more expensive but even at that point, all they\u2019re expecting to see is some printed stuff on card.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be warned, however, that game design may just take over your life: \u201cI don\u2019t have time for hobbies outside of [game design]&#8230; it\u2019s so all-consuming because if I\u2019m not designing games then I\u2019m playing them. I used to have other hobbies. They\u2019ve kind of fallen by the wayside a bit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So now you\u2019ve read this article and feel that you have found your calling as a game designer.\u00a0 The creative process of inventing a board game\u00a0can be divided into three distinct stages.<\/p>\n<p><b>Stage 1 &#8211; Coming up with ideas<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Play existing games for inspiration and think about how you would improve them.<\/li>\n<li>Choose an appropriate age range for your game and decide how many players it is suitable for.<\/li>\n<li>Decide whether participants are competing against each other or working together to accomplish a goal.<\/li>\n<li>Think of what players need to do to win.<\/li>\n<li>Consider game mechanics (How the game will work. Will players roll a dice or draw cards?)<\/li>\n<li>Think of a thematic genre for the game, such as science fiction, adventure story or murder mystery.<\/li>\n<li>Make a draft list of rules.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Stage 2 &#8211; Making and testing a prototype<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Sketch a rough draft of your board (Will your game follow a path? Will it have a finish line or a playing field?).<\/li>\n<li>Put together game pieces (Items like buttons, poker chips can be used as placeholders).<\/li>\n<li>Test your prototype alone, and be critical.<\/li>\n<li>Test your game with friends and family, explaining the rules.<\/li>\n<li>Test your game with strangers and make adjustments to the rules.<\/li>\n<li>Make a final list of materials you will need to make your final game.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong>Stage 3 &#8211;<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Manufacturing, producing and distributing your game<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This process is called publishing, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">there are two main routes: self-publishing and pitching your idea to a company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Self-publishing is a large financial investment and more information on this can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/boardgamegeek.com\/thread\/322382\/game-design- self-publishing- resource-game- designer\">here<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The more common route is sending your prototype to a publisher who can help you develop and sell your game. Game p<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">roposals are frequently rejected, so it is essential to make sure that your pitch is airtight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:
