The nettles on the ground wrapped themselves around my ankles as I felt the full assault of nature taking over. But the goats needed me: giving up was not an option.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Little would you know that I was on holiday. Here I was in a small village in southern Ireland feeding goats and making<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0cheese in exchange for bed and board.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This was part of the<a href=\"http:\/\/wwoof.net\/fowo\/\"> WWOOFing<\/a> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0programme which provides the opportunity to experience the excitement of farm life, for free.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30970\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30970\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30970 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/pic-6-1-1-625x390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"390\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30970\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30970 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/pic-6-1-1-625x390.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"390\" \/><\/noscript> One of our task was to feed chicken every morning. Credit: Audrey Barrier-Guillot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The right mindset is essential to be a really successful volunteer. According to Pam Boyko, the coordinatior of WWOOF Canada: \u201cVolunteers need to understand that it is about giving as well as receiving. If they are simply looking for a free meal and bed then this is not for them.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Be prepared to face bad weather and in rustic accommodation &#8212; Especially in Ireland, summer doesn\u2019t always show up. It is not five-star luxury unless a small, damp caravan with spider bed fellows is your bag but after a week you&#8217;d be surprised by what you can put up with.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I stayed at Millane&#8217;s house in southern Ireland. The Millane family make you feel at home by supporting you and getting to know you better (from my own experience). They treat you as a part of their family. John, a cheerful farmer, is helpful but busy with his other businesses. Nicole his Swiss wife, has the rare gift of kindness. I remember spending the evening with her and other WWOOFers, listening to music and talking about everything under the sun. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The family has two children, aged 12 and 8 who embrace the visitors on the farm and are fascinated by any group of foreigners.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Volunteers have to get along with farmers and their family as they become part of their daily life, according to Norwegian host farmer, Tino Schott. \u201cThey surround us, our children, our animals. If we are having great people, that is a personal enrichment. If we have people we don\u2019t get too well along with, that is producing bad feelings,\u201d says Tino. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A WWOOFer\u2019s routine and tasks will depend on the host farm\u2019s need and can range from feeding chicken to planting crops. Once committed, the WWOOFer must adapt themselves to a new lifestyle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31194\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31194\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31194\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/pic-pic-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31194\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31194\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/pic-pic-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> I had the chance to experience milking goats for the first time. Credit: Clo\u00e9 Jeliazovski<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>And while the experience can be amazing, you walk away having learnt an enormous amount, according to Erin Elizabeth, a British WWOOFer currently visiting New Zealand.&#8221;I learnt\u00a0a lot about a typical \u2018farmer\u2019s way of life\u2019 and how important his livestock are. It is a contrasting experience to everyday life meeting people you may not otherwise get to meet,\u201d said Erin.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An average day in Newmarket-on-Fergus (Millane&#8217;s place &#8211; Ireland) starts with feeding chickens and goats. As an animal lover, that is my favourite part. For the rest of the day until 6pm, I work in the field, planting and transplanting beets, lettuce or tomatoes. I learn plenty of things that I never would\u2019ve been able to learn without the farmer and his apprentice.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30902\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30902\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30902 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/plants-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30902\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30902 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/plants-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Planting and transplanting were part of my average day. Credit: Audrey Barrier-Guillot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lunch is a way of bringing us all together. In a certain sense, it reduces the feeling of loneliness. The meal at Millane&#8217;s place includes the farm\u2019s own vegetables, but no meat since they are vegetarian. With visitors from France, Spain, Germany, Italy and the USA, the meals prepared in the volunteers&#8217; kitchen are mostly a real eclectic mix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Besides work, there is free time during weekends and after 6pm on weekdays. It is the right time to go travelling around Ireland.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30950\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30950\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-30950 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/pics-cliff-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30950\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30950 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/pics-cliff-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> My week ends were devoted to travelling around the country. (Cliff of Moher) Credit: Malte Baumann<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While this all sounds attractive, there are a few things to consider before heading out into the back of beyond. There will be limited wifi, mobile data. Hosts often have limited internet connection. We are only able to connect with the outside world from 6-9pm, and only in a small outer garden, but that would really depend on your host.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Do your research carefully, and make sure you read the host\u2019s criteria before signing on. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are living on the countryside. People have to be active here by themselves. There is no shopping mall, but great mountains. There\u2019s no cinema around, no concert hall, but a guitar in the guest house and a collection of dvds,\u201d says Tino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Making the wrong choice might impact directly the host\u2019s livelihood. \u201cWhen you get several helpers after each other with little experience or reduced abilities, you may get discouraged. If you have to spend 20 minutes explaining a job you could do yourself in five minutes, you lose the point,\u201d says Tino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Helping on a farm should not be seen as a hard work but as something new and deeply fulfilling. I remember taking it seriously, desperate to learn, but at the same time seeing it as a fun opportunity away from my regular habits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>.embed-container { position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%; height: 0; overflow: hidden; max-width: 100%; } .embed-container iframe, .embed-container object, .embed-container embed { position: absolute; top: 0; left: 0; width: 100%; height: 100%; }<\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-container\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">According to Pam, \u201cVolunteers should be genuinely interested in and are passionate about organic farming and sustainable living.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cFarm life is a lifestyle for me. It\u2019s hard to differentiate between work and free time,\u201d says Tino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Therefore, an outstanding WWOOFer has more chance to take benefits from it, \u201cI felt quite enlightened and it also gave me the desire and drive to be more self-sufficient appreciative of my surroundings,\u201d says Erin <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">This sort of experience doesn\u2019t leave the WWOOFer or the host indifferent. It left me <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more aware of how privileged I am in my comfy house. It taught me on how to live in a new community, something that\u2019s become invaluable now, as an international student in Cardiff.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>For those who are interested to travel as a WWOOfer across Wales (North to South Wales), a few farmers are welcoming volunteers throughout the year . All you need to do is to register <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wwoof.org.uk\/\">here\u00a0<\/a>and choose your host.<\/p>\n<h2>The two best places INTERCARDIFF recommends you to go are:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Newmarket-on-Fergus: Newmarket-on-Fergus is small town located County Clare, southern Ireland. The place is quiet but welcoming. Transports (airport) are nearby, allowing to travel across Ireland. Don&#8217;t to look at the starts at night, you will be dazzled .
