This year\u2019s \u00a0is particularly significant, as it is 100 years since the first women won the right to vote in the UK.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31251\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/timeline-100-years-650-625x352.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-31251\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/timeline-100-years-650-625x352.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">A timeline of key events over the last century, see more at\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Timeline-of-100-Years-of-Women.pdf\">100 Years of Women.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Individuals from all walks of life attended an International Women\u2019s Day demonstration in the centre of Cardiff last Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Crowds gathered at 4:30pm under the statue of Aneurin Bevan, pioneer for social change and founder of the NHS.<\/p>\n<p>But 100 years on from the Suffragettes\u2019 success, why do we still need an International Women\u2019s Day?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31255\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31255\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31255 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/speaker-international-womens-day-cardiff-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31255 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/speaker-international-womens-day-cardiff-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> Helena Evans from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/tsmucardiff\/\">Trans+ Social Meet-up Cardiff<\/a> (TSMU) addresses the crowd.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe cuts in welfare benefits exponentially impact women far more than they do men,\u201d said Barbara Street, Women\u2019s Officer for the Labour Party for Cardiff North and one of the speakers at the event. \u201cThe austerity policies of this government have undermined services for women to the extent that they\u2019re almost on their knees.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recent research conducted by the House of Commons library found that 86% of the burden of austerity has been carried by women. Cuts to welfare will have cost women a total of \u00a379 billion between 2010 and 2020.<\/p>\n<p>For others, International Women\u2019s Day raises awareness of injustices in the British state pension system and a lack of social care provision.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It&#8217;s still the class war and it&#8217;s still a war against the male dominated world <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/v8qtXe4mTy\">https:\/\/t.co\/v8qtXe4mTy<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 InterCardiff (@intercardiff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/intercardiff\/status\/971796677253320704?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 8, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This was particularly important for Olwen Leavold who said, \u201cI\u2019m very angry that my sisters haven\u2019t been given their pensions. I think its disgusting that they expect women to carry on working after retirement; looking after children and old people because there isn\u2019t decent social care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whilst some women are forced into working well into retirement, others live in constant fear of gender based violence.<\/p>\n<p>Statistics presented by Gwendolyn Sterk from Welsh Womens\u2019 Aid also support the case that women have a long way to go to reach equality.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne in three women across Europe will experience sexual assault in their life, still. Violence against women is a cause and consequence of gender inequality,\u201d said Gwendolyn. \u201cWhilst it is disastrous, it means it is preventable and we can do something about it in creating gender equality within our society in Wales.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Gender equality and feminist causes have been steadily increasing across the globe. The #TimesUp campaign launched last year as a coalition of Hollywood leaders taking a stand for women\u2019s rights.<\/p>\n<p>Gwendolyn drew particularly on this now global movement during her speech. \u201cWe call \u2018Times UP\u2019 for perpetrators\u2019 behaviour that goes unacknowledged, unchallenged and unpublished,\u201d she said. \u201cAn era where survivors of violence are victim blamed- asked what they were wearing, what they were drinking rather than asking- why the hell did he do that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although the majority of attendees at the Cardiff talks were women or those identifying as female, there were some men at the demonstration.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31256\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31256\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31256 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Demonstrators-cardiff-international-womens-day-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31256\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31256 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/Demonstrators-cardiff-international-womens-day-625x352.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"352\" \/><\/noscript> Simon and his friends join the event in solidarity for International Women&#8217;s Day.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI identify as a Feminist but I don\u2019t think all my friends would,\u201d said Simon, a male supporter. \u201cI think it\u2019s the way people are brought up \u2013 the culture is centred on guys getting ahead. Even if it\u2019s not an active decision by some men, it\u2019s sort of an active thing in society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon is not alone. Male celebrities have now pledged solidarity by creating their own movement, #AskMoreofHim in the wake of the Oxfam scandal and Harvey Weinstein.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recent sexual harassment revelations in the media have made me think about the issue more,\u201d said Simon. \u201cIt\u2019s shocking how much of an issue it is if it\u2019s something you don\u2019t see yourself. But all these women are coming forward, it\u2019s shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_31253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31253\" style=\"width: 625px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-31253 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/LAST_IMAGE_ed-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-31253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-31253 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/intercardiff\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2018\/03\/LAST_IMAGE_ed-625x351.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" \/><\/noscript> A number of individuals joined the demonstration with strong messages of support.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Although media coverage is increasing, this perhaps demonstrates just how many women have been silenced for so long.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI talk to my mother and she says \u2018we have been talking about this for 50 years, why are you still doing this?\u2019\u201d said Claudia Boes, co-founder of Cardiff Sisters of Solidarity, who organised the demonstration.<\/p>\n<p>So how can we move forward towards a time when we achieve true gender equality in society and International\u2019s Women\u2019s Day becomes a thing of the past?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve tried it politely now for decades,\u201d said Claudia. \u201cI think now it\u2019s time\u2026to take it out onto the streets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use the interactive map to see what happened around the world on International Women&#8217;s Day this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Cardiff citizens gathered on International Women\u2019s Day to campaign for gender equality.
